http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/dr-laura-schlessinger-quits-radio-word-flap/story?id=11424039 She dropped the N bomb 11 times the other day and has quit her radio show. Al Sharpton makes an appearance...but the one quote that to me should be the crux of this thread, is this one. I like how she's quitting because of her "1st amendment rights". I don't think 1st amendment rights apply to the radio. This isn't a 1st amendment issue, this is a "I want to be able to talk all sorts of shit on the air and get away with it". The fewer Schlessinger, Limbaughs and Savages on the air the better. They're only there to scare people (usually older and easily confused people) into believing their shit. God bless them for making their money, but at least Jerry Springer admits that's why he is the way he is.
I believe if she released a CD, where you purchase the song/album knowing it will have certain colorful words in it, is not the same as broadcasting over the air. You're comparing apples to Chrysler's here.
I love how demonizing the word just makes it more and more powerful of a slur. If you use it colloquially more often, it loses a bunch of the original sting.
The two most offensive words in the modern venacular are what. "the n-word" and "the c-word" so when you use it, you mean biz.
Ever read Orwell's "1984" ? Or see the movie "Brazil" ? Seems like that's what we end up with if we get enough of this "good news." I have never listened to her - not once. My suggestion is that if you don't like her (or someone else), change the station.
I've listened to her and she's fucking terrible. Even though I'm generally a very conservative person in my own values and the advice I'd give, I've generally found her advice and commentary terrible. She didn't lose her first amendment rights, she lost her ability to get paid to talk because what she said was grossly stupid, poor personal advice, and poor commentary that doesn't even accurately reflect the views of social conservatives as I see them.
First Amendment says one cannot be legally prosecuted for speech, writing, etc. It does NOT mean one is immune from criticism. Even really harsh criticism. Schlesinger knows as much about the First Amendment as she does about variations in human sexuality. Nothing.
What if you happen to tune in to a radio station where they're playing rap songs that say "N-----" every other line, not realizing that this kind of language is being used . . . Is that also comparing apples to Chryslers? This is the silliest debate in the world, and it goes on and on. Black kids in the inner cities all over America refer to each other as "N-----" and it's perfectly fine, but let a white person use the word and all hell breaks loose.
Tisk tisk. Two wrongs don't make a right. If the fake doctor hadn't broken the mold for right-wing female haters with sour faces, we wouldn't have Nancy Grace now.
My wife listens to her and has told me she advocates for more traditional gender roles... mom stays at home and raises kids etc... and I am all for that. Not saying that it *has* to be that way... just that I think that the family unit may function a bit more efficiently in that configuration.
So, should radio hosts imitate the worst street lingo or (shock!) strive to set a better example? Incidentally it was not just the n-bombs. The caller complained about her white husband's relatives racist "jokes" and Schlesinger basically said shut up and don't be so sensitive. The caller talked about the "soft racism" of neighbors asking "What do black people think about X?" as though every African-American thought the same and Schlesinger basically said shut up, racism is just you imagination. As to advocating traditional roles, why then doesn't she live them? Just another hypocrite. And it's not just so called traditional roles, she hates gays, she blames women if their husbands have affairs, condems extramarital sex for women but not men, etc. Of course none of this means her free speech was violated. Maybe she just thinks she can get more money elsewhere.
I Beg To Differ. Even though they bleep it out on the Radio, its damn easy to tell what they're saying. Along with a lot of other words. To Illustrate my point: Believe it or not, you can read this: I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae.
