Here you have an opportunity to set some records and make the Sportscenter highlights for the first week and possibly ride those highlights with the pollsters and leapfrog a bunch of teams and vault into the top 6 or 8 if you can ride that 59-0 halftime score into a triple-digit finish and get it into the hundreds. But alas, the Ducks have completely gone away from their gameplan here and faultered in the 3rd quarter with two field goals. Are you kidding me? You trying to kill your rankings with 6 pts in the 3rd? Now looks like another drive is stalling and they'll have to kick yet another FG. Way to coach Chip. Go back to kindy football and give everyone a juicebox and trophy at the end of the game.

Internet sarcasm from John Hollinger. Or KP.

    One of those two.

I won't try and get too confusing with details and numbers, but to give people the basic understanding of how the BCS works, you don't have many opportunities to make up a lot of ground on teams with tougher schedules. But the first week is an opportunity for the primary polls that do pre-season rankings to get "re-calibrated" after week one, at which point they go forward with teams only dropping if they lose a game and almost never leapfrogging other teams. Other later polls (like the Harris poll) are made up of people that use those pre-season polls (that were re-calibrated after week one) into their beginning polls a few weeks into the season anyway. So the re-calibration week is the vital time for teams ranked #8-#11 (who likely won't have the opportunity to pass the other teams without a lot of things going right for them and wrong for others) to get re-calibrated into the top 7 so they have at least a realistic statistical shot.

Ducks going against another Division I-A opponent would have gotten all of the scheduling credit for their margin of victory since it wasn't a Division I-AA team like Portland State or like Western Kentucky or Eastern Illinois. So they would have gotten a LOT of publicity if they could chase a record since it was two Div IA teams facing each other. After a 59-0 halftime lead the NCAA Div I-A record of 103-0 was actually in jeopardy (which it almost never is because these blowouts don't happen against big schools facing each other). If Chip Kelly could have put the pedal to the floor in the 2nd half, he had an opportunity to get up into the 80s or 90s at worst and begin to get talks going about it and have ESPN breaking into coverage, etc.. It would have allowed the Ducks to be highlighted on every halftime update around the nation and Sportscenter and the tons of other media would have been hyping nearly breaking a 60-some year old record. This would have caused a buzz in the back of voters minds when they recalibrate the polls next week.

As it stands, they'll obviously leapfrog the loser of BSU/VTech into 10th, but I don't see it going much beyond that since they didn't make one national highlight reel that I saw, and the voters won't do more than see they won and leave them there. As where had they been featured every 10 minutes on Sportscenter for scoring 90-something to 0, then they would have easily leapfrogged Iowa and Nebraska (who played junior college teams and only won by 30 pts), and #7 Oklahoma who struggled and only won by a 7 pts against an unranked WAC team. So they would have at least slid up to 7. Not sure they could have passed TCU with them beating the Beavs. But it would have been close with enough publicity. Too bad Chip had to play the "good winner" mentality and not think about the unique situation that team was in given the score and their spot in the polls.

And zero Sportscenter highlights. Bye-bye now, thanks for adding nothing.

And I'm not trying to be disrespectful, I'm just throwing trash at you because you obviously didn't understand the premise with your reply.

So don't take it wrong, I understand this is a basketball forum and you probably don't follow NCAA that closely to understand the premise there. So a more precise reply to someone that doesn't follow college football is that beating a team 72-0 is about as rare as, well a week in college football. You don't blink twice about a score like that over the course of 50 games going four quarters with teams playing junior colleges in their non-conference games.

It's like a having an NBA player go out and score 40 pts in a game. Might make Sportscenter on a slow night, but otherwise is just listed on the boxscores. Beating a MWC program 103-0 is like an NBA player scoring 100 pts and challenging Wilt's high game record. How much more would it be talked about if Roy scored 100 pts in a game than if he scores 40. Probably the difference between just being mentioned in the box score and being talked about worldwide for weeks to come and stations breaking into their coverage when he gets into the 90's and is close. That is the difference between 72-0 and 103-0 between two qualifying major Division 1A schools.

The real question is would it have looked like running up the score on purpose in an age where some media and some idiots frown on that not understanding the implications running up scores could help with the BCS ratings and computer polls later down the road. With a school like Oregon having so many black eyes, it may have been construed as a bad move, but since it was a major Div 1A school, I think folks would have focused more on getting close to the record than running up a score since that really only applies to playing junior school programs.

Barner made the Heisman watch list after his performance. I think that's something...

If Chip would have left him in the game he could have ran for 1000 yards and scored 200pts. They would have just immediately given Barner the Heisman.

    Damn that Chip!

Just so you know EHOF. Margin of victory was purged from the BCS formula in 2002. So no matter how badly the Ducks beat New Mexico it still would not have counted for much nor would they be leapfrogging anybody higher than them.
