That's a bad comparison because we have no fucking clue where this draft pick is going to be. It's not like we know for a fact that this will be a top 3 pick. If that were the case, and we could actually compare Bayless to a potential draftee, then I could see this argument, but it's not like that. We have no idea where this pick will fall.

Do you see anywhere that says how it is protected? Is it just top 7 protected? Or is it protected for the entire lottery range?

Wait, it's top 7 protected this year, and 8 next year through the 14th, and then it turns into 2 2nd rounders?!

What kind of weird scenario is that?

Roy, Miller, Matthews, Fernandez. That's a strong backcourt imo.

He could turn into the next Jermaine O'neal!!!

Or he could turn into the next Alvin Williams. One or the other.

New Orleans won 37 games last year and picked 11th in the draft and that was with Chris Paul missing half a season and an aging Peja starting at SF who has his own injury issues.

They won't be close to the lottery this year.

Kinda weird. If Monty coaches them to more wins, he loses the pick. If he leads them to failure, they keep it.

    from Blazersedge

Sources tell Blazersedge the trade has been approved by the league office minutes ago so it's official. The pick Portland is set to receive is top-7 protected in 2011, top-8 protected in 2012, 2013 and 2014. After that, it would turn into two second-round picks in 2015 and 2016.

Why the hell would it from being a top 7 and 8 protected pick, and then turn into 2nd round picks? Does the team know something about a player who is currently like 13 now and would be a steal in the 2nd round in 2016?

The Blazers also receive a trade exception worth nearly $2.3 million. Because the Blazers are currently luxury tax payers, the move saves the team roughly $4.6 million.

That's not a bad deal then imo. I think it's unlikely that New Orleans will be one of the 7 worst teams in the league.

A financial move that happens to make opportunity for players that are perhaps more deserving. I can live with it.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Bayless both improved a lot more than Telfair, from year 1 to year 2, but was also just a better player in his second year.

My take on this trade is that I'm underwhelmed. I don't think Bayless is a future star, but I think he has the talent to be an above-average starter. I don't view a mid-first round pick to be have that kind of expected value. Further, Portland has proven able to buy such picks for straight cash before, so this seems like little more than a dump to me. Disappointing to me, but we'll see how it all plays out.

I like Bayless and I think he can be successful in the league. However, his lack of a consistent outside shot meant that he wasn't going to be able to give us the help we need.
