There's a larger problem here: Roy's problem may not be able to "fixed" through surgery. Rest may be the only remedy, and a temporary one at that. If he simply has no cartilage left, then he has to get used to a new reality regarding what his knees feel like. Imagine if your car lost its shocks. You just have to learn to drive more gently and when you hit a pothole, you really feel it. That's what bone-on-bone is like in your knees.
I have never heard of a professional athlete taking part in a clinical trial, with the exception of maybe Magic Johnson. That could be because I have never heard of it, or because no team or agent would allow a player to take part in such a trial, even if it was determined to be safe.
