Berger: Andre Miller For Marcin Gortat?

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com thinks that the Portland Trail Blazers and Orlando Magic might consider exchanging point guard Andre Miller for reserve big man Marcin Gortat...
    ------------------------
Miller could be the elixir for Orlando. All he does is find open shots for his teammates, and Dwight Howard would be thrilled with Miller’s elite talent as a lob-passer. Howard, who will be part of a blockbuster free-agent class in 2012, has quickly grown frustrated with the Magic’s obvious limitations.

The piece that could get it done is Marcin Gortat, who’s a starting center on any team but one that has Howard. Though Gortat’s contract goes out three more years, it’s at a reasonable rate for a starting center -- topping out at $7.7 million in 2013-14, when Gortat has an early-termination option.

Blazers GM Rich Cho has liked Gortat since his days working as Sam Presti’s right-hand man in Oklahoma City, so such a deal would seem to make sense from all angles. Gortat would give Portland a reasonable insurance policy in case Oden never becomes worthy of his No. 1 overall selection in 2007, and Roy would have the ball in his hands more -- which is something he can’t have when playing alongside Miller. Whether Roy’s knees will hold up under those demands is a valid question, but one Portland may very well need answered one way or another.
    ------------------------

Berger also writes that "executives working the phones during these early days of trade inquiry say" that Portland is one of "the teams that appear most determined to make deals before the Feb. 24 deadline."

There are probably worse trades available for Miller, but I'm having trouble thinking of any.

Plus, why bring in Gortat when he would just end up injured in a few months.

Horrible? Getting a starting center for an old guard with less than one year on his deal is horrible? What is your idea of good?

Gortat can play. He's 26 and a servicable big man. Acquiring him would let us trade Joel and/or Camby and still remain at the same level of competitiveness we are now, even if we just get future considerations (draft picks, etc.) for the big guys we trade... and we get younger at the 5 spot.

I dunno what else we could get for Miller, but I think that would be a pretty good return if we're going to trade our veterans and punt on this year.

Who plays the point? Patty Mills? Would anyone have thought last summer when we had Miller and Bayless that our starting point guard in December could be Patty freakin Mills?

Gortat's career high in mpg in a season is 15.8 this year. Saying he is a starting center doesn't mean he can be one. I do realize he's had Howard in front of him, but he hasn't proven to be a reliable starter.

Things are going south so quickly for the Blazers today that I forgot my daily outrage over Bayless being traded for nothing this season. Thanks for reminding me, NateBishop!

Not too horrible, IMO. We're not gonna get a young up-and-coming All-Star PG for Andre. But it does leave us pretty thin at PG.

    4 points, 5 boards a game?

We need a PG. Jameer Nelson is better than Gortat. IF we give them a starting PG we should get one in return. He'd help this team immensely, more than a shlub of a center.

Jesus. Then its Imaginary Cap Space, trading a 20/10 NBA Allstar PF + carrying 2 years of shitty contracts + not using RLEC for a guy who averages 5 points per game?

Good luck with that one dude. Gortat is widely recognized as a starting level center in this league, and was highly courted when he was a restricted free agent. If Orlando hadn't matched, he would be Dallas starting center now. Gortat was extremely pissed he didn't get to leave because he wants to start somewhere. Last time I looked, Dallas does a pretty fucking good job at picking personnel. If you want to poo poo it, have at it.

I just can't interpret this to mean anything other than keeping Roy happy. Right on the heels of reports that Roy supposedly demanded that Miller be traded. Coincidence?

Does this mean we're moving Joel for a point guard?

Oh this is smart! Andre has saved this teams ass more than Roy in the last two years without question, he's NEVER hurt and he's consistent! WHAT THE HELL ARE THE BLAZERS DOING?

We need more scoring. Gortat does not supply that. I think we should save our best trade assets until that is addressed. Maybe at the trade deadline, with no other options, you make that move. But certainly right now that would not help.

That's not really saying much, is it? Also, I only pointed out that Gortat has never played starter minutes, or even legitimate back-up minutes, in his career. Please point out where anything I posted about Gortat was factually inaccurate.
