Their title is misleading, but basically someone found a pinky bone of a possibly young new hominid species in siberia, they ran some mitochondrial dna tests and it didn't look Human or Neanderthal. They are now trying to map the full genome I believe. So we have ogres, (Neanderthals), humans, and hobbits (se asia), and now what are these trolls? elves? I like to wonder if maybe there was more to ancient folklore than we modern civilized people believe.

The difference in DNA among any two human beings on the earth is so small that scientists believe there was some catastrophic event that wiped out (millions) all but a few (thousand) human beings and that we all are descendants of those few. This is true of the DNA difference between an aboriginal and the queen of england, as it is for any two people.

Well they also tried to make a statement it appears that the date of these bones implies a migration out of Africa tens of thousands of years earlier than previously thought.

I imagine if you took a large group of ignorant people, you could get about as many to believe Tolkein's books are factual history as you can that the bible is.

Middle Earth is certainly far closer to reality than the bible.

Serious comment: I saw the article and look forward to reading more. Shows how much more interesting real science is than creationist "god did it end of story" fake science.

Jocular comment: Is this another gay cousin? At least half my cousins, both sides of the family, are LGBT. Always room for one more!

Seems like "evidence from comparing DNA" is taken as some sort of proof positive of all kinds of things nowadays, when all it really gives us is hints, clues, and indications.

If the average layman actually understood DNA and the many ways results can be manipulated and transformed, nobody would try to pass it off as evidence of anything important. Since the general public is ignorant, DNA is used just like the bible is used to support whatever view is wanted.

"It's very exciting to come to this conclusion," said archaeologist Avi Gopher, whose team examined the teeth with X-rays and CT scans and dated them according to the layers of earth where they were found.

Here's an example of lazy science.

Depending on the geology of the region, using this methoid could miscalculate the age of the remains by tens of thousands of years or more. All that would have to happen is a flood, an earthquake fault, or even ceremonial burial, and the remains would be found in much older layers of earth.

I didn't realize you gathered so much knowledge about DNA when selling those murder victim homes.
