Re: UFC 125: Resolution (Jan. 1st) Not at all upset with the draw. Maynard won the first round 10-8 (perhaps 10-7), Edgar won rounds two-four, and the last round was a toss-up. This shit needs to happen more often in MMA. Judges arbitrarily giving rounds and fights to guys is worse (re: Leonard Garcia). Sounds as though Edgar will be facing Pettis next. Fair enough. Maynard had his chance. Brian Stann blasting Chris Leben was a bit of a surprise. Leben didn't put up much of a fight. Dunno if his head was in it. Silva/Vera turned into a grudge match quickly. Vera is still a paper tiger. He built up a rep as a can crusher early in his career (his biggest achievement being a win over a very fat and unready Frank Mir) and has completely fallen flat as a major status fighter. Wouldn't be shocked if the UFC let him go. Silva is a badass and that broken nose was horrific. Jeremy Stephens knocking out Marcus Davis was unsurprising. Davis' chin is shot. Poirier was the surprise of the night. He put it on The Fluke. Grispi was going to be the next guy to challenge Aldo. Dunno where they go in that division from here. Antonio McKee lost his UFC debut. Dunno if it was controversial. He has some 'splaning to do. Also, Mike Brown lost again? What happened to this guy?
Re: UFC 125: Resolution (Jan. 1st) Thiago Silva expected to face the winner of Jon Jones/Ryan Bader. The timing of both that fight and the Edgar/Pettis fight works for the big Toronto show... right, UFC? C'mon.
Edgar finally showed what a champ is all about!!! I was for Maynard, but I was very impressed with Edgar's heart and skill. None of the bobbing and weaving all fight and playing it safe like we saw in so many of his other bouts. Save that for boxing! This is MMA and we got a taste of a little of everything from Edgar in that fight. He even tried to FINISH it a few times instead of playing it safe. I really though the BULLY had him finished in ROUND 1. PROPS to Edgar. Great fight!
Re: UFC 125: Resolution (Jan. 1st) Silva was pretty much the asshole in the fight, but rightfully so. Vera didnt even try to engage him on the ground. Bitch slapping him for not doing a damn thing was hilarious IMO. LOL.
Frankie Edgar retains title with draw For five minutes, Gray Maynard looked like the best 155-pound fighter in the world, but he could not extinguish the considerable fire housed within UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Edgar retained his title in a hotly contested draw with Maynard in the UFC 125 "Resolution" headliner on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, weathering a first round in which he was brutalized by nearly 100 power punches from the challenger. Two judges scored it 48-46, one for Maynard and another for Edgar. A third saw it a 47-47 deadlock. "It was a great fight," Edgar said. "Gray came in hard. S---, I don't know." That Edgar reached Round 2 was a monumental feat in itself. Clocked by a ringing left hook a little more than a minute into the match, he was on his heels for the remainder of the first round. Maynard appeared close to finishing it on a number of occasions, as he waylaid the champion with a relentless volley of punches, highlighted by a pair of wicked right uppercuts. Miraculously, Edgar stayed alive, even as he teetered on the brink. When asked what he remembered about the first five minutes, he replied, "Not much." The 5th round was close with neither of them really doing anything significant but I think Edgar landed more so I had the fight a draw and was pleasantly surprised when the judges got it right IMO. Stann/Leben was pretty good, the rest of the fights on the PPV were ok. The Prelims though I thought were outstanding, 2 big knockouts and a huge upset, damn glad I took the time to find ION on my cable package.
Yeah I was fairly drunk by the main even but it seemed like Edgar won every round after the first 10-9. I'm all for more draws being called but I don't think this should have been one. How do they pick a winner in fights like Rampage-Machida or Machida-Shogun 1 and then call this one a draw? It was close but IMO so many other fights that are much closer have winners and losers. Does Pettis get a fight in between now and his title unification bout? Stann was very impressive. As was Kim. Vera fuggin blows.
Yeah Vera is a walking disappointment. DW has changed his mind and will probably book Edgar/Maynard 2 despite Pettis being promised a shot.
10-8 Maynard 10-9 Edgar 10-9 Edgar 10-9 Edgar 10-9 Edgar I had it 48-46 Edgar. Great card, IMO. I was really kicking myself in the ass for ordering it before it started because I didn't think it'd be a good fight, but it turned out to be a hell of a fight. Can't wait for Edgar/Maynard III
I wouldn't be too happy if I were Pettis. He said that he thought Frankie won the fight, as well. I can't believe how Frankie came back after that 1st round.
You sound like a bitter BJ fan. Frankie doesn't have powerful hands, so he uses his bobbing and weaving to dart in and out and connect with his opponent. His speed and endurance is absolutely incredible to watch, IMO. He doesn't stop moving.
He is also very small for LW and probably doesn't have the punching power to stop a top contender. It seems Pettis is in a hard spot now. He waits for his title shot (8-10 months probably) and stays the WEC Champ or takes a fight in the meantime and potentially loses his chance to unify. This is why I supported him getting a shot ahead of a Maynard re-rematch.
