I don't object to anybody saying that Griffin's better than Aldridge, just the statement that "it's not even close". Aldridge is putting up similar numbers since becoming the first option.
I have to say this: the way Griff is playing in his second season really puts Oden's second season in perspective. Even the one season he was reasonably healthy, he was not on par with what Griff is doing. Ah well......20/20 hindsight.
I disagree. Blake Griffin (who I love watching, btw) - has a 23.2 PER, Oden's PER was 23.1 - and you have to remember that Blake is a good defensive player and a monster offensively, where Oden was an efficient offensive player and a monster defensively. FWIW - Grif's ORTG of 112 is lower than Oden's 118 - and his DRTG of 106 (very good) can not come close to Oden's 100 (elite DRTG in the league). If you look at their WS/48 - Oden's .214 trumps Grif's 0.164 (FWIW - Oden's rookie year's 0.167 is about the same as Grif's 0.164). There are a lot of things to mourn about Oden - but his production on the court when healthy is not one of them.
when healthy oden was the 2nd best overall center in the league and not far behind howard. to this day i would take a healthy oden over durant. the only thing to regret is oden's health. also griffin is probably going to end up having the best season by any rookie in the modern era. if the clippers make the playoffs he could be the MVP. the fact that LMA or a healthy oden are/were anywhere near what he is doing is a huge compliment to them.
Also of note, Aldridge is a 112/106, and has a WS/48 of .152 (and rising; it was .146 yesterday morning). Also, e_blazer; I was just trying to say that Griffin's Clippers are actually playing better than LMA's Blazers right now, even since LMA has gone into Beast Mode. Without that 1-13 start, the Clips would be in a much better place... and of course, without Griffin or LMA, both teams would be Minnesota-level cellar dwellers right now. My opinion is that LMA (post-12/17) and Griffin are playing at about an equal clip, which like crowTrobot says, is a huge compliment to LMA since Griffin is having what might be the best rookie season in the last 30 years.
I knew I should have put 25 instead. http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/tiny.cgi?id=RGVyL That Blake is even in the discussion in this comparison (check the advanced stats for a good pace-agnostic indication of effectiveness) is AMAZING. If he improves his free throw shooting, he's about as good as Jordan at his position.
Of course not. Griffen is averaging 37 MPG, Oden only averaged 21. (which also undermines the PER argument) Poor conditioning and foul trouble undercut his performance.
In his second season, Oden was no where near an elite center. 21 MPG? Those are back-up minutes! In his 3rd season, he had 20 strong games before he broke down...but we don't know yet what Griffen's 3rd season will look like. I'm just comparing their second seasons.
Greg was averaging 6 fouls/36 minutes last year - foul trouble was not what kept him off the floor for 36 minutes, and he did not seem to be in such a bad shape at all. I suspect it was more an issue of Nate trying to keep his minutes down and finding some minutes for Joel as well... but who knows, I was not consulted...
His MPG also increased last season (pre injury) - so his impact increased. As I keep saying, I am only comparing 2nd year to 2nd year.
It's a compelling comparison, but keep in mind that the Clipper's resurgent record is heavily skewed toward home games. I haven't paid attention to who they've played so far... 12-13 home 3-12 away That means they have a lot to prove still in order to finish anywhere near .500 and be in the playoff hunt.
That's fair; I have a soft spot for the Clips because they are my best friend's team, and like what they've managed to do lately. They are still a long way from being a good team, but you can seem them starting to get chemistry together which is something you simply did see in the last year or two. They're starting to play to win, instead of for a paycheck or for their own stat lines. They will be dangerous until Sterling cheaps out and lets the team implode.
