Here in Chicago on Sunday, the Chicago Bears will host the Green Bay Packers for the right to represent the National Football Conference in Super Bowl XLV (that’s 45 for all you non-Romans). I’m not sure how the rest of the football-watching world views it, but around these parts it is, um, kind of a big game. OK, it’s huge, like it makes Armageddon look like a chess match huge.

The game is being called the biggest game ever played in Chicago. I can only speak to games played in the last 50 years, but after giving it a lot of thought, I have to admit that I agree with the hype-meisters this time. Let’s look at the competition (since 1960).

In 1961 and in 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, but it’s hockey and they won both deciding games on the road.

The Chicago Bulls won 6 NBA championships in the ‘90s. Following this genuine dynasty team was pure joy, but none of these titles were decided by a game 7 in Chicago.

Yes it is the packers this time. Isnt this the first time the bears and Packers have played each other in the playoffs?

I remember the Bears, Packers game in 1963. Y.A.Tittle! I was just a child, but being originally from Southern Indiana I was able to watch the game.

    Cold as hell! lol.

I remember the hit Larry Morris gave to Tittle and from that point on, he wasnt the same.

Bears defense that year was historically great.

Since this is the Packers this is an important game

Yeah, it's true that the Bears played (and beat) the Pack in 1941 (exactly one week after Pearl Harbor). Appears it was a tie-breaker game for the conference...normally, there were no playoffs at that time. After beating the Pack, the Bears beat the Giants 37-9 for the championship. Just to be clear, I wasn't even a glint in my daddy's eye at the time.

I still think the biggest game ever was the 1996 Downers Grove South high school prom.

Alas, you've set the bar too high with your great writing as of late. I can't live up to those expectations.

That's nice of you to say even if it's not true.

I was just kidding about the article, but any high school prom that deserves consideration as the "greatest game ever" sounds like an intriguing story, but maybe one that is best left as simply a sweet memory for those who "played" in it.

The "In Chicago" as a qualifier eliminates what I remember as the biggest game for a Chicago team. That would be a game in Pittsburgh, against the Pirates, when Rick Sutcliffe won his 20th game and clinched the pennant for the Cubs. 1984. The Pirates' stadium was empty except for a few thousand Cub fans who drove there from Chicago to see it.

I'm a Sox fan, but my favorite National League team is the Cubs...yeah, I'm atypical. The '84 Cubs' season was wonderful and I attended Steve "Guppy" Trout's game two playoff win. This said, for better or worse, in objective terms, Cubs and Sox games just can't compete with the Bears due to the "split vote." This, of course, has nothing to do with what you cherish most.

Well, the Cubs hadn't even been in the World Series since 1945, nor won a pennant. The Sox won in 1959, the Bears won the NFL championship in 1963. It was extra special for us Cubs fans.

Though I like the Sox, too.

I'm new here, but it's abundantly clear that the average age of posters here is WAY above the board on which I normally post. I was a big-time gray-beard there, but not so much here. Frankly, this is not an entirely good thing. It's nice to have some folks who were Bulls' fans "back in the day," but it's bad for volume.

Oh, to answer your question, I'll be 58 in a couple weeks. It's pretty old, but it beats the hell out of being dead.

The Bears made a game of it behind their 3rd string QB. If he didn't throw that first interception for a TD, they might have won it, too.
