YES. They are all about praying for Japan. As an atheist, I posted one saying I am sending positive brain waves in Japan's general direction. Fun fact: 64% of Japan is atheist.

Seeing this city without power is eerie. It's something you'd see in an apocalyptic movie.

Take a good look folks because that will be Portland some day. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but it will happen. Earthquakes are insanely destructive. The quake in SF back in 1906 killed thousands and they weren't nearly as densely populated as we are. I'm just hoping we don't get the Tsunami and that Japan is able to save as many lives as possible.

Re: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Japan

I'm in Narita airport right now...literally standing in line to board when the first one hit, and then after the second aftershock they moved us outside. No one was hurt at the airport, which impresses me. (But it didn't stop prayer for the millions of others affected by this) B/c it was a few thousand people sitting on the tarmac in 45deg weather when it started to rain, they gave in to "peer pressure" by a few of us military types and let us into the first floor commuter terminal. Then they talked about the potential for a 30' tsunami coming, but the airport administrators wouldn't let anyone move to a higher floor until it had been inspected. That finally happened 10 minutes ago.

Then we heard that all the flights were cancelled, even though the runway was inspected as clear, and we had pilots and planes sitting at the terminal waiting for us. They passed out the emergency blankets, ritz crackers and one bottle of water (and some formula for the babies) and told us they didn't know any more, but that we would "probably" be re-booked "sometime after tomorrow". Since immigration had left the building, it was like being Tom Hanks in The Terminal, where you couldn't get on your plane and you couldn't leave their holding area (which is packed). Well done to Delta, who at that point opened up the planes on the runway, took all the snacks and started passing them out to people.

We'll see how long this goes. Terminal's now safe, runway's been inspected and the poor bastards that were on the tarmac for 7 hours took off successfully. Our planes are still here, and pilots are here. Though there's devastation all over, I'm selfishly hoping to get out of here quickly. My baby girl's 1st birthday party is tomorrow. :(

Hope that all of you in the tsunami zone make it out of this ok. From early reports of the Philippines and Indonesia, it seems that not much damage is coming from the delayed tsunamis.
