I was just talking with Mags about what if the league had league paid incentives. For example every team pays in to the league $5 million. That would give the NBA a pool of $150 mill to payout to players for various things like... $2 mill for making the all star team. $3 mill for making the all NBA 1st team $2 mill for making the all NBA 2nd team $1 mill for making the all NBA 3rd team WC or EC player of the month - $1 mill WC or EC player of the week - $500,000 All defensive team $1mill Sportsman of the year - $2 mill That way you would have standardized fan friendly incentives that wouldn't count towards the salary cap.
I'm talking about if there is a $45-50 hard cap. A star player could sign for $8mill a year but could still potentially make $14-16mil a year. Also in a player like Brandon Roy he would be getting financial rewards during his rookie contract instead of getting rewarded for his past achievements on his new contract.
Not a bad idea at all. However, I feel like the way the All-Star teams are selected would need to be tweaked. The fan vote would basically have to go away.
I'm glad you thought of that sly. I was getting worried that you can't come up with any bright ideas!
