http://1340thefan.com/former-one-on-one-sports-host-papa-joe-chevalier-passes-away/ Just now heard the news that he died two days ago. I'm devastated. I lost touch with him about 6 years ago but he and I had been very close friends in the late 90s. I knew him as AJ, my pet name for him, as his actual name was Armand Joseph Chevalier. I worked for him briefly in 1999 as an NBA consultant for his talk show via my home in NYC. We went to a Bulls game in Chicago and then gambling. He got a royal flush on video poker. He came and saw me in Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway and we talked on the phone on and off til, like I said, about 6 years ago. I wish I could reconnect with him now but of course, it's too late. I believe PapaG named himself after him. Yes? This is very upsetting news. R.I.P. AJ.
Yep. Papa Joe was the only sport-talk person on the air when I went to college. I worked nights in a warehouse and listened to him religiously. I used to call into his show; our most heated exchange (fun, not mean) was regarding Casey Martin using a golf-cart. Papa Joe said that walking was a big part of golfing; I asked him why golfers had other people carry their equipment for them, if walking was such a big part of the game. I told him that my buddies and I carried our own sticks when we played, and if the pros wanted to claim to be athletes, they should do it as well. I also pointed out that John Daly smoked cigarettes during his rounds, so to me, letting a guy who would lose his leg at some point ride in a cart didn't seem like that big of a deal. It flustered him, and he remembered that call as I would periodically talk to him over the years. A very nice and funny guy, and although I never got to meet him, he made my afternoons and nights in a warehouse rather enjoyable.
