Nice job BB! I really like the way it turned out. Love the trees and lighting. Have a chic/artsy/modern look going on. I understand it doesn’t just look nice either, but you’ve been dialing in the sound as well?
Interesting article, Mook. Repped for putting it on the board. The question posited in the study is one that I've pondered ever since I started making money. I'm one of the odd ones who achieve the greatest psychic benefit from saving money over spending it. But if I have to spend money, I prefer purchasing goods (especially durable goods) over experiences. Interestingly, my wife is the same way. Moreover, we gain a tremendous amount of happiness from transactional utility, which is a fancy way of saying that we love getting a good deal. When we got married, we made the decision that we would travel abroad as a vacation once a year. We've so far held up that end of the bargain, but we actually prefer low-budget travel over going the luxury route; you're less insulated from the local culture. We could have traveled abroad more than that, but my wife insisted that we allocate a percentage of our disposable income to charity. And good for her that she did; it's a better feeling than buying anything.
Huh, looks bigger than that for some reason. I had to put mine (including surround sound) in storage. My darned two year old kept getting at the speakers and the subwoofer in particular. Looking forward to my sons being a bit older so that they're actually allies on the home theater front. (currently have no bandwidth to even ponder any built-ins)
BB, nice setup! You took the time to make it a visually interesting space, which I didn't do with my listening room. Our house project this Fall/Winter is to gut our basement. We have about 800 sf in our basement that was only dug out to 4' instead of the 8' the rest of the basement was. As a form of exercise, we'll be digging the crawl space out by hand, as well as chipping up the old concrete floor in the regular basement. I figure I'll have plenty of time with no pro football or pro basketball My reward for that work will be that I will gain three rooms that will be all mine. I'll get a new listening room and a music room for my instruments, both of which will be soundproofed. I'll also get a club/billiards room with an air exchange system. What the family will get out of this will be a true media room for a home theater. While I know a bit about two channel systems, I know bubkis about surround sound, so it will be fun getting up to speed on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
maxiep, Wow, you'll have a kick ass basement once you are done! Obviously you'll want to run all the speaker wire before you sheatrock etc. There is tons of stuff online that can help you with speaker placement., its easy. I strongly recommend you check out monoprice.com for wire/cable, speakers, tv mounts etc. etc. Great products, great prices.
You're right on target with the wiring. We're taking the opportunity to rewire and replumb the entire house (it's 91 years old) when the basement ceiling is removed. We're also getting rid of our baseboard heat and installing infloor radiant heat (another reason to repour the basement floor). We're enlarging all the windows and creating egress wells for the downstairs bedrooms. Finally, we're getting rid of our back staircase and enlarging our front one so there's natural light coming down the center of the entire house. It's going to be a big project, but it's really going to rationalize our mechanicals and flow through the house. I'll definitely check those site out. Thanks BB and repped!
With this in mind I've got to give props to BeerBoy. He did it right. If you know anything about getting a good deal, then you know that the key is PATIENCE. BeerBoy was very patient in researching then waiting before buying stuff. I've helped many people with this type of thing and most of the time they just want to run out to Best Buy and purchase everything. I cringe as I try to convince them otherwise, but they have to have it.
Somebody better tell Mrs. BeerBoy to keep a tight leash -- I think he and Bob Dobalina might be in love lol
