I think they're better than ours. Our system focuses on punishment and not rehabilitation. I worked with incarcerated vets for a while and the stories they tell me.....
Oh, I know our system sucks, but I was just curious what their success rate was for rehabilitation. I like reform rather than punishment. People argue with me that without punishment there would be nothing to detour people from committing crimes, but I argue back that it's not something they can help. People will commit crimes either way, and I'd rather take a chance on getting someone out of prison that wouldn't do it again, rather than have him raped a 1000 times and come out and do the same damn thing or worse upon his release
In a situation like this, I like our system. This scumbag would never be a free man again in the US and therefore could never cause more physical harm to society. Do you think he should be reformed over being put to death?
No. I think he should be shot before tax payers have to pay any money. I was speaking more in terms of non violent crimes. Anyone the violent murders, rapes, etc. should be shot ASAP. No appeals, no stays, no hope. Just put a fucking bullet in their head.
As for me, I like the punishment aspect as it is the true deterrent. The punishment should be miserable. However, there also has to be a reform side equally strong. People come out of prison with virtually no assistance except that if they don't have a job in so many days they may be placed back in prison. And very few people hire ex cons so the cycle is destructive.
Some kind of transition program would be very beneficial, but of course programs cost money. The odds of any new programs (especially one like this that would be very costly) getting funding during these economic times is near impossible.
What is effective rehabilitation for a thief? I am all for rehabilitation too, but I wonder what is a more effective deterrant, a tough criminal system where you know you go to jail if caught stealing or going through cousenling on why it is bad to steal.
The sad part of all this is that for the brief time I worked in State & Federal social services it was nearly immediately obvious that easily 60-70% of monies spent in that arena is pure pork and/or waste. For those who have seen all those hundreds of billions going down the drain continuously it makes one pause and consider how totally screwed up our system really is. Clinton tried to make some serious changes but the Congress shot him down in flames.
Norway has some judicial problems, and their police force looked incompetent taking that long. He doesn't deserve jack btw, that's obvious.
