This bullshit about marijuana possession being worse if you're driving within a certain distance of a school...there are probably a thousand schools in Houston...and he was busted at midnight. Is that when children walk home from school? I can't believe this. School zone bullshit is bad enough, but the asinine legal system enforces it at midnight? Hey, legal system fascists! Stop fighting the American culture and legalize what Americans want to do!

I call bullshit on your premise. Cartels have been around for decades, and do more than just provide a service where recreational marijuana is sold to peace-loving individuals just looking for a way to relax. The cartels are not "empowered" by law enforcement. Our "boarders" have been the scene of illegal activity since before the Mexican-American War, and violence generally ramps up when good folks attempt to do the right thing and uphold the laws of our country. Whether illegal immigration or drug possession or distribution or theft or murder, the "civil war" that's being fought is between criminals who don't care about more than making a buck vs. those who are charged with protecting society from that evil.

I really don't think that's a fair argument. Alcohol causes more impairment than pot and it's legal. I think the US needs to get a clue and stop this nonsense of filling up prisons with people who just want to sit on the couch and eat Cheetos. Aim at controlling the meth, cocaine, ecstasy, even prescription medication that actually kills people when it's abused!

I was thinking more along the lines of the dealers but these drugs (and alcohol) can lead to hallucinations and violence and if the abusers are dangerous to other people in society because of it... yes. Marijuana doesn't cause hallucinations or make people violent. Overdose deaths from prescription opiates out numbers overdose deaths from heroine, cocaine, and ecstasy combined. At this point prescription opiate overdose deaths now out number deaths resulting from MVAs in the US. It's a humongous problem and we've started to see instances where doctors are being charged with murder because of it. There has never been one case of someone dying from an overdose of THC. I'm not condoning the use of any drug, legal or illegal, but I am able to use logic here and it tells me that there are clear priorities when it comes to the "War on Drugs". The economy sucks, the government is running out of money and has a set amount of resources. I think these resources should be prioritized by the harm they cause to the users and to society.
We've spent a Trillion dollars on the War on Drugs. Does anyone here believe that it is any more difficult to get drugs today than it was before the War on Drugs? I thought not. Does anyone think the WOD has done ANYTHING to stop drug use? I sure don't. Weed could be controlled and taxed like alcohol. The gangs would get cut out of the business, and the government would make a lot of money. I guess that is a crappy outcome. It's not like the government needs to find ways to cut costs. Instead, let's continue the war on drugs and keep throwing bales of good money after bad, and not make a damned bit of difference in the drug trade or to drug use. Yay! Go Blazers
If drug X is not physically addictive and If drug X does not cause physical harm or death to the users and If people on drug X and not prone to increased violence Then Drug X should be legalized.
