The explanation is obvious. There is a double standard regarding racism in America. Whether that's wrong or right is for the OT board, though.

Fine...he's a third world dictator, rather than a plantation overseer. He may be a corrupt, mentally deranged POS....but heaven forbid somebody suggest he is a bigot!

It's HBO. No one gives a shit about what people say on that channel.

It was a stupid thing to say, but I don't think it's a fireable offense.

Really? So if Craig Sager came out and said "all black NBA players are slaves and they should just accept it". Would that be ok?

Fire him? That comment makes him the frontrunner for the Jimmy The Greek sensitivity award.

This isn't the first time he's been called this.

I'd gladly be a "slave" -- they get the best trainers, 4-star hotels, food, millions to play a game...

    In short, STFU Gumbel!

No shit, not to mention a sick per diem, and chartered flights.

If I'm an owner, I'd propose a 51-49 split for the players, but teams would have to go back to the days of flying commercial, bunking double in hotels, and meals would cover a continental breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and Red Lobster on off days for dinner. Game day spreads would be catered by The Sizzler in a conference room at the hotel, and then the school bus would leave for the arena 3 hours prior to the game.

I think Stern would act similiar if the NBA were predominately white (being the old man that complains about the younger generation not having values) and tire of every issue involving blacks being talked of as slavery.

It's an accurate assessment of Stern, so I have no problem with the statement.

The problem is when whites get fired for making similarly accurate assessments of people of any other race.

I think that Stephen A. Smith, of all people, had this one right.

David Stern is arrogant b/c he thinks he's smarter than everyone else, not b/c he's racist or thinks that black people are stupider than anyone else not named David Stern. Ryan Ruesillo told a story about how Chad Ford was talking to Stern about a story involving some salary cap details. Stern basically attempted to dismiss Ford (who's one of the more in-the-know NBA insiders and a smart guy) by opining that it wouldn't be worth it, as Ford wouldn't understand the legalese. Ford basically said..."I've got a J.D. in International Law and have covered the NBA for 15 years...why don't you try me?"

That must be one helluva plantation Stern is running where the "slaves" all drive Bentley's and can't be fired without being paid their full salary

Stern's definitely a fucking douche-bag, but this fucking slavery reference by a rich black guy who's been rich (or at least well off his whole life -- Gumbel's father was a judge) is garbage.

There are 30 owners and over 400 players.

No single owner should be making more money than their 15 players combined.

Sorry but the owners run real companies and are far more responsible with money on average. Why should someone in the real world not make more money than a basketball player? Only a handful of players deserve a raise.

Didn't Adrian Peterson basically say the same thing about the Nfl owners during that lockout? It's really a stupid comparison considering athletes make so much money, and can walk away when ever they want.

Link to evidence, not a anecdote, that owners waste less money than players on average? You do know that many veterans own several small businesses, don't you?

Using that logic, if the owner only clears $15 million in a year, should the players share $7.5 million for their season of work? Or, in the many years Paul Allen lost money on the Blazers, should the players also have had to lose money on the season?
