...will Oden and Raymond Felton be UFAs before another game is played? And will that mean they won't ever play a(nother) game in a Blazer Jersey?
too much yet TBD to answer that million dollar question, well the Oden one anyway I'm yet to be convinced that Greg hates Portland and doesn't want to play here with LMA and crew
I think one of the system issues is that there is going to be a greater financial incentive to stay with your current team. I'm not worried.
Does anyone know what they did with the missed year in the NHL lockout? That should be a very similar scenario. The NBA could have all players contracts rolled back a year, so Camby and Felton have one year left and Oden is a RFA. Or they could have the lost year wiped off the contracts, so Camby, Felton are free agents, Wallace has a player option for one year but could opt to be a free agent, Oden is unrestricted, or restricted. Yes we really have no idea. The owners would probably push to cancel the year of players contracts and have most player be restricted free agents but the owners would settle for less if the players cave on even more BRI.
Yes Gerald has a player option after the 2011-12 season. I think Gerald is a quality starter and we should aim to keep him. But he definitely could decline rapidly as he losses athleticism in the coming years and has some risk. I would want to see what happens with Oden long term and any Roy amnesty first before Wallace gets extra years. If this team is going to be many years away from contending then it doesn't make as much sense to lock up Gerald even though I love watching him. If we have to rebuild around LaMarcus, Wes, Nic, then it probably makes more sense to trade Gerald for draft picks or something.
As it stands right now, yes they would. Like everyone else has said though, it's impossible to tell what the new CBA will look like
So. In theory we could lose Oden, Felton, Wallace and Camby. (And then, presumably also Roy, to amnesty.) And largely because of Paul Allen and fellow-minded hardliners buggering up the negotiation process. And yet, supposedly Rich Cho was fired for suggesting that we "blow up the team." Hm.
Gotta Keep Armon and Greg for insurance! Armon Johnson Wesley Mathewss/Eliott Williams Nic Batum/Gerald Wallace Lamarcus Aldridge/Gerald Wallace Marcus Camby/Greg Oden/Joel Freeland
I haven't looked around, but Blazers can't be the only team with quailty players whose contract runs out this year. If Felton, Oden, Wallace and Camby are at risk, so are a lot of other players around the league. Depending on the rules, there could be a major free agent period happening if this lock out wipes out a season.
I'm going to be a little bit of dick and do the "I told you so" routine: I remember bringing this very scenario up before last season's trading deadline and being called a troll and trying to get everyone upset. The Blazers have painted themselves into a rather unpleasant corner and potentially face the prospect of losing whatever assets they had for essentially nothing. I hope that first round exit was worth it to everyone that so loudly and passionately argued for keeping the team together, because that could end up being the only payoff this team is going to enjoy for trying to go "all in" with Wallace instead of resetting the roster.
We're not the only team, but there's an awful lot of so-called key pieces at risk for the Blazers. Odds are contracts will get rolled over for one more year, but you can hardly bank on that with Stern threatening to void contracts
For me, the intensity and atmosphere of the Rose Garden during a playoff game is worth about 10 regular season games. Anytime the Blazers make the playoffs, it makes for some great basketball atmosphere. I wouldn't consider Joel, Daunte, Marks and two non-lotto picks as going all in. Which player or draft pick the Blazers went all in with do you think will hurt the Blazers down the road? IMO, none of the players will be missed on the floor (maybe Daunte, but easily replaced) and a late draft pick is a shot in the dark that rarely produces the talent of a Wallace and what he did for the team last year. Personally I thought it was a great trade as the Blazers didn't give anything of real value for Wallace. In fact it was that move that makes me aprreciate Allen. Blazers basically got Wallace for nothing because few clubs were willing to take on Wallace's contract.
Hey when did you start thinking Wallace was a bad idea. You liked this trade at the time and loved Walalce's energy. Remember saying this: Nik: I'm with Nate (Bishop, not Mac!). Give him an off-season to get integrated with his teammates and a starting role (where he belongs) and I think alot of these frowns get turned upside down regarding his play and fit so far -- this comment is strictly limited to his role on offense. Defensively, he's been pretty great. He's an instinctive in the passing lanes, he's strong as an ox, quick, rebounds great and injects a heavy dose of toughness into, what is often-times, a milquetoast team. http://sportstwo.com/threads/180466-Question-about-Gerald-Wallace?highlight Or this analysis of the Blazers going to the playoffs with Wallace Nik: Nate finally has a rotation of players that actually fit his switching defensive scheme. Wes, Nic, Wallace and LMA can all cover 3 (4?) positions and we finally have a true slasher at the 3 spot, but who also shoots best from long range in the corners. This could be a really fun sprint to the post-season. http://sportstwo.com/threads/179641-Karl-on-Wallace-Trade? And now you say you are going to be a dick and say "I told you so" and ask others if it was worth it? Problem I see is that you didn't say so at the time. I know you don't like Blazer management and ownership, but that was good trade even by your account.
Exactly how I feel. I know he's weird, unconventional, even crazy at times but if he sees the value in a deal he's very willing to overspend on the Blazers. I see a lot of fans saying PA must got but, as a small market team, I think we're lucky to have him. I'm not sure we'd even be talking about the play offs right now if we had a different owner without the mile deep pockets.
I briefly looked up the NHL lockout, and the contracts did not roll over for the missed year, players weren't paid for that year. So if the NBA follows a similar blueprint Felton and Camby would be UFA. Batum would be a RFA. Wallace would have the option to become a free agent. But the big question is if Oden would be a restricted or unrestricted free agent.
One odd thing I noticed while looking through the NHL agreement after that lockout was players are guaranteed at a minimum 54% of revenue, and it climbs up to a max of 57% of revenue if the NHL revenue exceeds $2.7 billion. Last year NBA revenues were $4 billion. At the NBA level of revenue the NHL players are far and away guaranteed 57%. What the hell are all these statements about the NBA owners wanting an NHL system and that the NHL players completely caved in during their lockout???
The NHL lost their TV contract and ended up being televised by the OLN network. The incentives based split is a great idea for the NBA, IMO. But the NHL is going to take a while to get its BRI up to where players will see any upside.
