Warriors Interested In Brandon Roy The Warriors would be interested in signing Brandon Roy if he is waived by the Blazers, according to sources. Roy’s former agent, Bob Myers, is now the assistant GM for the Warriors. Roy would also prefer to stay on the West Coast. Golden State would prefer to sign a big man, but Roy makes sense for them to add depth as a playmaker. The Oregonian reported on Monday that the Blazers intend to use their amnesty clause on Roy immediately. Steve Jason, Will you be reasonable? I have been a fan and followed Roy carefully. In my opinion, he came back too soon from injuries several times and did more harm to his knees. Now, he is damaged goods, his knees are worn-out, has very little quickness, and will be out of the league in 2 to 3 years. Why would Portland NOT use the amnesty on Roy? It can lessen the burden of a very bad decision they made when they extended him at near-max when they knew his knees were damaged, right? Jason Fleming Here is why Portland would not amnesty Roy (at least, not right now). I agree with the idea he may have come back too early. I also think he is putting more pressure on himself than necessary. I think he needs to accept a smaller role, needs to be willing to be a sixth man. But….why make this decision now? Hear me out. Portland doesn’t gain much by using the amnesty now. Why not wait out the season and see how he does? Why not see if Roy really did just need more time to recover and see if he can be his former self? If Portland just used the amnesty now and he went to another team and became an All-Star again, can you see Portland’s fan base going through the roof? Especially when he also pocketed the full price of his contract from Portland? I want to see how Roy play in 2011-12. Portland doesn’t have to make this decision immediately, so wait it out, see how it goes. Make this decision in 2012, when the team has a season of supposedly healthy Roy to use as reference.
I have done it. I have circumvented the hell out this CBA. Portland amnesties Roy and some other team with a decent injured high priced player amnesties that guy. Then basically the two players swap teams allowing both franchises to keep the others very good player while also saving millions in cap relief. It could also be determined that if one player is notably better than the other a draft day trade could also be worked out swapping picks or cash or whatever. For example. Mehmet Okur, or Rashard Lewis could probably help us as much as Roy.
I thought in the new CBA waived players can only be bid on by teams under the salary cap. The Blazers are over the cap even with Roy waived the season so it's doubtful players like Lewis or Okur will be available to us in the unlikely event they clear the waiver phase w/o bidders.
Growth of Aldridge as our undeniable leader? Growth of Batum at the 2? Growth of every other player on the team that likes to push the ball? The opportunity to use the entire MLE to sign extremely important front court guys?
According to the Oregonian yes. I assume that all has to do with Oden's contract though. http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2011/11/trail_blazers_will_be_hard-pre.html "The Blazers are over the cap and dangerously close to the tax threshold. Even waiving Brandon Roy under the CBA's amnesty clause won't take the Blazers under the cap."
But keeping him puts us well over the tax threshold. The figure I heard this morning (and frankly I'm too lazy to look it up) was that we could expect a 13 million dollar tax bill if we keep Roy ... that makes him effectively a 28 million dollar player.
I agree 28 million is hard to swallow. No doubt. But 14 million is also hard to swallow while watching him play for another team. Although GS would be a bad situation for him. Probably the worst scenario for him IMO
I know that, it just caught my eye and got me to thinking about what the real burden his salary would represent to the team. They either pay him 28 million (effectively) or they pay him 15 minus whatever his new team pays him (probably somewhere in the 2-5 million per year range). The dollars and cents don't seem like that big of deal until you realize it could free up anywhere from 14-17 (or more?) million dollars in cash savings for Paul Allen and with Allen on the side of the hardliners in the CBA negotiation, I get the feeling he's starting to close the purse strings.
You couild be right here. But there is the possibilty that PA took the side of the hardliners for the sake of the future of the league (and Blazers) but not necessarily for the "present" of the Blazers. I guess we will know real quick.
Something tells me Paul Allen only acts in the interest of Paul Allen, but you're right we don't know for sure now, but we will real quick.
Can Aldrige play the whole season as the undeniable leader physically? At least it is a shorten season so he has that going for him, but last year he seem to run out of gas.
Kinda when Roy came back, no? Also, I am talking more about the offense going through LA, not our dumbass coach playing him too much. When he is in the game, he needs to be the guy. When Roy is here, LA defers to him far too often because of the offense. The ball movement stops and Roy uses his talent to get shots off. Nate didn't adjust to Roy's new abilities, and neither did Roy or the team.
