Does it only apply to players currently on the roster? Meaning: Could a team trade a large contract for the other team to use an Amnesty on that very same contract?

The reason I ask is that there is a 2 year window on Amnesty. If this was the case; I suspect a lot of teams exploiting this Amnesty.

I believe a traded for player with an existing contract can be amnestied by the acquiring team, assuming they have not used the provision yet

I heard on NBATV that it can only be used for players on the team's current roster when the new CBA is ratified.

Amnesty can only be used on players that are currently under contact by the team that signed that contact. It's suppose to only help teams get out of bad contacts that they signed players to.

Thx Sly, will it apply to a contract signed this year or next under the same parameters of use?

No. It can only save teams from past mistakes. Not from new ones.

The best way to look at it is it's a pre lockout 'get-out-of-jail-free' card. I can't envision any scenario where they would write a provision into the CBA where a player traded from this point forward would be eligible.

Yeah that would be a serious implosion of exploitation of the rule. I'm glad they closed that loop-hole. That would be really bad, IMO.

Keep in mind, they only have a tentative agreement in principle right now, nothing has actually been signed or ratified; the lawyers for both sides are writing this thing up as I type this.

So, when should it be official?

I was under the impression it would be possible to amnesty traded players. Each team is only allowed a single amnesty cut. That way teams such as the Pacers who were smart and conservative and didn't hand out bad overpaid contracts could still get a strategic benefit from the clause if they so wish.
