But Rondo would do better under Nate?

LMAO so we trade the only three point shooter left, other than Matthews, on our team for a point guard we just got Felton for? That makes 0 sense to me. Hell yeah Rhondo is the shit, but this reminds me of that year the Blazers had nothing but defenders and slashers. It was really tough to score once the other teams crowded the paint. I would rather enjoy some balance.

Now if we got Crawford, this may be intriguing.

In early stages of free-agent dialogue, Jamal Crawford has heard from the Hawks, Pacers, Magic, Bulls, Hornets and Nets, says a source.

We can't afford Crawford because of Brandon.

Explain (with full facts and figures and cited sources) how the Blazers could afford Crawford even if they amnesty Roy.

I think the thinking is that, if we amnesty Roy, we are now looking at a cap number of around 56M, which puts us slightly under the cap (58M), but not far enough to make any deals for >MLE. If we don't, we have a cap number of 71M plus whatever Greg ends up with, plus Nolan and Diebler etc.

So it becomes a matter of whether we can go after free agents using the "Big" MLE (which you can only use if you are NOT a taxpayers--under 70.3M cap #) or whether we can only use the mini-MLE. The Big can be for 4 years and 20.45M guaranteed. The mini can only be 3yr/9.27M guaranteed.

If Roy is not amnestied, it doesn't matter what we do with Oden or Smith, etc.....we're going to be in the lux tax region and have to stick with only the mini-MLE. If Roy is amnestied, we can sign Oden, Smith, Diebler all to deals (provided they add up to less than 14M or so this year) and still use the 4/20.45M MLE.

The thinking of many is that, while there's a chance that Crawford or others of similar talent may take a full MLE to go where they want to, there's no way in hell they're leaving 11M guaranteed on the table. :dunno:

Keeping Roy puts us over the cap. Amnesty Roy and we are under the cap thus allowing us to use the full MLE. If we amnesty Roy we can give Crawford the full MLE. If we keep Roy we can only offer him a partial MLE. There is nothing else to really explain?

Crawford is not taking the MLE to come to the Blazers.

$5 mil per year? Seriously? Dude made $10.8mil last season and is coming off 6th man of the year 2 season's ago.

    Get real.

    he made 10.8M last year.

And maybe, after a guy's made 60+M in his career, he'd give a hometown discount to play with his friend(s) and in the Northwest.

List the Crawford caliber free agents that have signed with the Blazers for the MLE in the past.

    Ha ha ha ha.

List the players who have given the Blazers a "hometown" discount to stay with the team for FAR less than they were offered elsewhere.

You could turn that around and say, "how many FA's of Crawford's caliber have openly lobbied to come here?"

    or
And I don't recall our players going out in a full-court press scenario before for another free agent, but I wasn't around for much of the 90's.

I'm assuming that you don't think Miller is Crawford-caliber?

What does any of this have to do with a handful of poster setting up a silly strawman claim:

Not using the amnesty on Roy this summer will prevent the Blazers from signing a desirable free agent this summer.

That unlikely scenario assumes that $5mil per year is more than enough money to lure a good player. There is little evidence to support such a claim.

Crawford saying Roy is his best friend undermines the argument.

Miller was signed with cap space - not the MLE. Miller signed with the team that offered him the most money. There was no discount.

Looks like Crawford will be in the range of 8 million or so a year according to a tweet I saw a while ago

Which means amnesty or not doesn't get us there.

Yep. If he signs for over the full MLE, we had no shot to begin with. Now the only thing to discuss is either using the full MLE or the partial one on other player(s)

If they are unsure on Roy, or unsure on other players available to us, I think what makes the most sense is negotiating as if you have both. If you find someone you really really like at the 5, then you amnesty Roy. And, maybe everyone you like in that range goes for slightly more, then you don't HAVE to amnesty him. I know we need to waive him to use the 5. But there's nothing that says we can't offer it. I imagine amnesty is a quick process. Not some week long thing. Landry says hey, I got a full MLE offer I like, but prefer playing in Portland for the same. If Blazer brass likes it, ok, waive Roy. Sign him.

It's kind of a knock on Rondo when you consider it'd be him plus many other pieces (Green/2 first rounders) for a player who doesn't have a meniscus in his left knee.
