"When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?" I'm REALLY starting to like this Gilbert guy. About time someone besides Cuban stood up to that manipulative little prick Stern. Gilbert's right. NOH are owned collectively by the league - meaning the other owners. They are NOT the personal property of David Stern, Inc. ANY trade the Hornets make should be put to a vote of all the other owners. BNM
Anyone that has sympathy for Gilbert should be forced to live in Cleveland for a decade. I bet your opinion changes on day 1. We missed some great basketball from KG being locked away in Minnesota. The Laker offer was more than fair since Odom and Gasol was not chopped liver. Gilbert brings up the haul that the Griz got back, but forgets that the Griz also had to take Kwame. They got lucky in Marc Gasol being good since he lasted so long in the draft. Even though he is not going to play for us, I hope CP3 does not continue to get unfair treatment since the league owns the Hornets.
So you don't want superstars to be in small markets because not as many people could see them? The NBA owners all equally paid money to own the Hornets, so they should all equally get a voice in how that team is run. I gotta agree with Gilbert. The main thing he asked for is that the owners get to vote their input on the biggest decision of something they own. That is the norm for all owners in whatever business they are involved in. Think of being a stock owner, you have voting shares and have input in decisions. Similar situation here.
Except they are all tainted because they own a team in the same organization. They don't care about the Hornets. They care about their own teams.
I have zero sympathy for poor, put upon Paul, who could of had a huge contract in a city that loves him. But he shit on them. They're not good enough for Chris Paul. The league is doing nothing to CP3 that CP3 isn't doing to them. Paul is essentially vetoing the owner(s) trades unless it's to his liking, where he can make his own wittle super team with all his wittle super pals. The league should sue him right back. It'll have the same amount of success. Again, why would another owner agree to a NO deal that not only helps your opponent but loses you money through revenue sharing? Doesn't seem like a model for success, does it. If NO wants to deal Paul, start with something that doesn't lose other teams money. Or, if you must, find a fucking buyer and sell it. Let's say you're a team... A team that agreed with NO in a extend-and-trade deal, but it was nixed because Paul doesn't think you're good enough, or big enough, and so he won't sign an extension and now you can't have him. That's what Paul's doing to the majority of the teams in the league. And now he wants them, as his own owners, to let him have his way? Good luck with that, Paul. Next time before burning bridges, make sure you don't need them.
chris paul is a depreciating asset who was totally reliant on speed and thats the first thing that goes with nba athletes. moreover, paul is a jerk, who on the court constantly berates his teammates. if he wants to go to LA or NY, he can leave in the offseason and sign for the vet min.
Sorry to say this but the league cancelling the trade because they "own the Hornets" is pure BS. Even if as a Blazers fan I have many reasons to hate the Lakers and defiinitely don't want Paul, Kobe, possibly Howard playing together for a division rival, I find this to be very wrong. I believe in playing by the rules, and if the rules allow such trade "the league" can't suddenly switch hats and say they deny this trade. What trade would they allow then? Or would they allow only Paul leaving for nothing? and would that be the Hornets interest? Dragic, Martin, Odom and Scola with Okafor is a better starting five than they have now, even with Paul. This is just Pure BS!
Why? Owners are allowed to nix any trades. We would have had Chris Paul a couple of years back if it hadn't been for the owner who nixed a trade that the GMs had agreed on. This is what's stupid ABOUT the league owning the Hornets. Remember, the other owners actually have to contribute money to pay the salaries of the Hornets players. Why shouldn't they have a say like EVERY OTHER OWNER. As soon as a buyer arrives for the Hornets, or, perhaps better, they get contracted, this will go away.
This was the Blazers thing from July, 2010. http://blog.oregonlive.com/blazers/2010/07/ford_trail_blazers_were_close.html
Exactly. It makes it salacious to scream "LEAGUE OFFICES VETO TRADE" because it sounds like a precedent-setting overreach; but in reality they weren't acting as "The League" so much as "The Owner". George Shinn kills a trade negotiated by his team's GM--no big deal. David Stern killing a trade negotiated by his GM is in reality no different.
I agree that the entire situation of the NBA owning the Hornets is stupid, but this last move makes it impossible. If I was the Hornets owner (or fan) I approve this trade but if I'm another team's owner I don't want the Lakers to have Chris Paul. BTW, If any owner should have vetoed this deal it's the Rockets', imo.
