This is crazy, a great player's career cut short.

With Oden & Roy both on the up and out, LMA & Matthews are the future. Good players though, none the less.

    Re: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Brandon Roy played 321 games and 11,439 minutes as a Portland Trail Blazer.

By comparison, Bill Walton played 209 games and 7033 minutes in a Blazer uniform.

Maurice Lucas played 257 games and 8620 minutes as a Blazer.

Dave Twardzik: 280 games, 6921 minutes

Lionel Hollins: 315 games, 9236 minutes

Of the 10 players to have their numers retired by Portland, 4 played fewer games for the Blazers than Brandon Roy and 5 (LLoyd Neal: 435 games, 11,015 minutes) played fewer minutes for the team than Brandon Roy. If games/minutes played is your criteria for getting his number retired by Portland, Roy definitely qualifies.

Although, the four specifically mentioned did something Roy did not; they brought Portland a championship.

I'm not saying Roy doesn't deserve to have his number retired, but it seems that the organization, thus far, seems a bit number-retire happy.

Just heard the news. This actually comes as a relief. No more worrying about him playing for another team. No more worrying about him playing, then taking a few games off, then playing etc. No more worrying about paying him so much or whether or not to use the amnesty clause. It's over. It's sad for him, sure, but in the long term, he will be okay. It sucks he never had the chance to lead us to playoff success but I will always remember Game 4. I cried at that one.

i was wondering where you were

its so sad, but there is the small silver lining of him getting out before he became a cripple, although this must have felt like an absolute shotgun blast to the gut for him to hear it

Twardzik, Hollins, and Steele did not "bring Portland a championship"

Lucas and Walton did. Those other scrubs rode the train. By your standards you may as well say Fisher brought the Lakers 5 titles.

    Re: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

No disrespct to the 1977 championship team, but there are multiple guys whose numbers are retired who weren't even starters on that team and did nothing else significant in their careers. They were role players on a team that made an unexpected and miraculous championship run. If being a contributor to that lone championship is enough to get your number retired in Portland, what about Johnny Davis and Tom Owens. They played more minutes and scored more points for that team than Neal, Twardzik and Steele.

Roy was a team leader and better player and than those guys (other than Walton of course), but just wasn't part of a team capable of winning it all, or even getting out of the first round. Roy's teams won more games in his first four years than Petrie's teams did during his entire six year career and Petrie's team never even sniffed the play-offs. But, Petrie's number is retired.

Yes, Portland has been too eager to retire player numbers, but based on the 10 they have retired, Roy certianly qualifies both in terms of minutes played, total contributuion and quality of play.

Agreed. By the standards the team has established for retiring numbers, Roy's deserves to be retired. I just think the standards have been pretty darn low. Heck, if Sebastian Telfair had been on the 77 team, his number might be up there too.

    Re: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

The previous owners screwed this up and set the bar low. They went with their hearts and not any logic.

They need to some how honor these guys without hanging their jersey's from the rafters. Not sure how to do it, but eventually it needs to be done so the more deserving ones can stand out. It's harsh but they can't continue on like this or there will be even more hard feeling. (or 50 jerseys)

I hate to ask....but is any of this actually *official*? ESPN and SI are still treating it as a rumor.

Roy is most likely getting a 2nd opinion from a doctor not on the Blazer payroll.

It does seem weird that its 3:30 and we still dont have any legit confirmation. The local media is treating it as a done deal.

Supposedly Wallace and Camby confirmed. Coaches gave speech at practice. Nate and Chad are scheduled to speak at some point today.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I think Roy has to be checked out by league doctors before he can be officially medically retired.

Yep, it's a requirement for the league to approve a medical retirement.

With that in mind, it doesn't really seem fair to penalize the team if the player comes back and plays 10 games (like Miles). If the league appointed physician recommends/approves medical retirement, how is that the team's fault?

It's a stupid rule, but if that's how the CBA is structured, then that's how it is, fair or not.
