Philadelphia was no higher than 16th in pace factor during his time there, and they were 20th in pace his final year there(2008-2009). He's old
The 76ers were 20th in pace that season Quite the running warriors This isn't OLive, I will shit on you
I can't think of another coach who dislikes turnovers more than Nate. That's the reason he doesn't fastbreak.
Very good MaxI but then what is this shet he puts out, we will run this year, I always wanted to run more. Why does he do the run run but watches the walk walk?
I remember being told that very same thing. The problem is that he's now with the Clips and they run more than the Blazers. The proof is in the pudding.
Sure. But how does that explain Nate's career as the coach of Seattle? I don't think he's lying. I think that he values things other than pace more than he values pace, and since mistakes are inevitably going to happen when the team runs, he's going to instinctively slow things down. Just like he's always done (again, except for the one season in Seattle). I don't think Felton is more well-suited to run than most other PGs in the NBA. He certainly didn't run under Larry Brown. Ed O.
Man, I think some of you would only be happy if Paul Westhead was coaching the Blazers. The pace was much faster in the first game, as anybody without a Nate-shaped chip on his shoulder should be able to recognize. There wasn't a single time when the shot clock got down below 5 seconds and on most possessions the shot went up prior to 15 seconds. Yeah, the pace slowed a bit after the first quarter, but primarily because the guys aren't in shape yet to run that much and because the second unit isn't as good at it as the first. I think the pace is going to be just fine this year, but whatever it is it won't satisfy some around here. A 20 point blow-out and you're still whining. Give me a break.
Also I would like to add that Nate actually stresses D more than anything. We may not be good at it, but he made damn sure we tried our hardest. That energy also may slow a aged player like Miller. On Denver, it's about outscoring the opponent more than just stopping them from scoring. More energy is used on scoring than playing D
I get what Ed's saying. You do the same thing 10 times, it's hardly surprising to be expected to do it again for the 11th. But there's also the saying that you play like you practice. Since, well, forever, Nate has started the season thinking he had Brandon Roy at SG, so the offense has to run in a way that fits Roy's style. When Roy broke down last year midseason, the team was scrambling to find an identity. Sure, Andre was the driver of the offense, but Aldridge and Batum had never experienced playing uptempo (or even moderate tempo) NBA basketball. I'm guessing Nate was too busy keeping the ship afloat to seriously consider changing the playing style. As for why Nate never ran in Seattle, I always used to think it was because he just didn't run. But remember, it was his first coaching job. You fuck that up and you don't get another one. Maybe his conservative approach reflected what was best for Nate's own career path--don't make waives, let your star carry you, don't rely overmuch on PG's like Luke Ridnour to make fast break decisions. One year he had a pretty reliable Brent Barry to run the offense and they were 15th in pace. Barry left, Ridnour got back the starting job, and the pace dropped to 27th again. *shrug* Maybe people, including coaches, can change. Nate's been part of the National team. He saw what a little razzle-dazzle can do to solidify a squad (and maybe help a trio of superstars bond). He's got job security. And maybe even he has been wondering a little what it'd be like to coach a moderate-tempo team for once. It's got to get old being know for the most plodding offense in the league, even for a guy like Nate. Maybe Nate sees this season as a clean slate. If he's ever going to have another team that's 15th instead of 30th in pace, this is the time to do it.
....yet we still won by 20. Running is good at certain times. When its deep in the 2nd half and your blowing out your opponent by 20+ you want to burn some shot clock.
Nate's Sonics were 14th in pace factor for the 2003-2004 regular season. Saying Nate has never coached a faster paced team is factually wrong. It's right there in front of you.
I have no idea how Nate won 52 games with a starting unit of Ridnour Allen Lewis Reggie Evans Jerome James He even won a playoff series Fucking wow
Ray Ray and Lewis were on fire (Rashard got his max contract based off of that year) and Ridnour and James played the series of their lives. It was great to watch. The term "contract year" summarized them well... Jerome James 5/30M Rashard 7/121M Ridnour- picked up his 2.4M option, then extended him 3/19M. Ray Allen - 5/85M Antonio Daniels - 4/22M Nate - 5/30M
He got similar career years out of Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw. If players under Nate have years where they play far above and beyond their career norms, isn't that an indicator Nate is a good coach? I think it is pretty damn impressive what he did with that Sonics squad.
Who said his teams never (not even once) have failed to be slow? It looks like you're arguing against a straw man to me. Ed O.
