anyone have a cabin out in the woods or anything? pros/cons? i'm thinking about doing that rather than buy a house/condo in LA. Something like an hour or two away like in Lake Arrowhead to do some weekend warrior shit.
We have one on one of the beaches here in Texas (2 hours away). It's more of a pain in the ass than anything else. Just my .02
It seems like more work than anything else right now. I prefer to to just rent one now. I am keeping it for investment purposes though. I bought it right after hurricane Ike, so I am in it right
...my dad has a townhome/condo in a gate community in Palm Desert and it is the shit! Best most relaxing vacations ever
We have a cabin at Lake of the Woods, OR. It's a bit different of a set-up, though, because it's on a rotating 10-year Forest Service lease. We probably spend 3 weeks to a month out of the year there as opposed to our home. It's a 5 hour drive.
I'm thinking anything more than a 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive away I'd never use. Something near a lake, like Arrowhead or Lake Elsinore. But nowadays, everything has the same minimalls and shit. who knows....a log cabin somewhere would be dope with no internet and no television. maybe just the phone as a modem thing...disconnect a bit.
Start out buying a 2nd that you rent. After you pay off some mortgage and get some cost back through rental fees, you can 1031 exchange it for your dream vacation home.
My buddy has a place at Temple Hills (Laguna Beach, CA) and it's the shit. It's a nice place to own a place if you can handle the taxes.
Things to consider are location, location, location... If it's not within a few hours' reach you won't use it much. If it's also nearby for other relatives that can be nice. Most of all the immediate setting should be a nice one.
