    Portland could have easily unloaded extremely injured Oden for a second round pick

    To which team? One that had 7 mil of cap space free? And why would any team do that? Why would they ruin their chance at cap flexibility for an injury prone center?

    I would bet almost every team could have, and would have put together some package to get Oden if Portland offered him up in trade last year. We would have got nothing of value in return, but the Blazers werent' forced to keep him....IMO

    He couldn't have gone back to Ohio.

    Edit: Never mind, by withdrawing after the lottery, he actually could have.

    Portland could have not exercised their team option for year three of Oden, or even year 4 of Oden. After two years, the team could have just released him by not using the team option.

    Nope, not at all. The team had option years they chose to exercise and they could have pulled the plug at any point and traded him for an expiring contract in years prior and at least gotten something for him. This is on the Blazers at multiple levels (for failing to pick the eat-drink-and-breathe-basketball guy Durant, for failing to do their homework on his knees, for failing to cut bait and for choosing to keep him around year after year, setback after setback.)

    They didn't do that as I think there was still hope, prior to the blood clot and further knee surgery, he might have a career again. Now even I have to think he'll never play again in the NBA. And if he does, it will be very limited. If no other team makes him an offer I wonder if he'll drift to Europe.

    So after two MF surgeries you thought there's still hope, but after a couple minor cleansing scopes and blood clot you've abandoned all hope?

    well it sucks Oden has gone through all he has. The fans that hold it against Oden or the organization, that he has had so many problems, are just being angry at such a polerizing situation. Being angry at the situation is fine but it seems as if a lot if people have turned that anger and have directed it at management or Oden something i cant understand. The chance of Oden coming back healthy has always been worth the risk for the horrible offers we would have gotten for him. A pick on the later 20s or a secound rounder is nothing special so holding onto him if thats all could get for him just cost PA luxury tax money since we were over the cap anyway.
    Taking Oden over Durant is an arguement you cant win nowadays and the fact it keeps getting brought up has become annoying. We drafted Oden not Durant we have had to live with it.
    The fact that fans are so mad at this situation just shows how much Oden would mean if he could give us something on the court.
    im going to hold onto hope that he plays again but if not i want to look towards the future not the past.

    Re: Wow, Oden is just a fricking mess

    Yes he did get to pick his employer.

    The NBA.

    He was chosen, offered the set, standard contract for new employees, and told where to report.

    This structure is pretty similar in many ways to a hotshot graduate of law school or finance choosing to work for one of a very limited group of the most sought after multi-national firms - knowing that:

    Unless they are a very rare superstar, they will be paid what all the other top performers like them get, ie, standard set deal;

    They will report for work where they are told;

    They will most likely be moved around, often on a whim;

    If they don't like it, they are free to work for a less renowned company, set up a shingle on their own, or go to dental school.

    Sounds like todays minor surgery turned into another microfracture, done for the season.

    Re: Wow, Oden is just a fricking mess

    The Portland Trail Blazers have announced that center Greg Oden underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee today. The surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colo. Oden will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 NBA season.

    "Initially, Greg was undergoing a procedure similar to the one he had a couple of weeks ago to have debris cleared from his right knee," said Acting General Manager Chad Buchanan. "However, once the doctors were inside Greg's left knee, they unfortunately found articular surface damage and determined microfracture was necessary."

    Oden, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, was selected by the Trail Blazers with the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. In 82 career games (60 starts), Oden has averaged 9.4 points (57.7% FG), 7.3 rebounds and 1.43 blocks in 22.1 minutes per game.

    "This is not the news we were hoping for Greg or the organization," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller. "It's hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg. He's a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback for him. We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time."

    Well, there you have it. I wish Greg well and I've been among those holding out hope he could come back, but this pretty much closes the last inch of opening on that door. Just plain sad.

    WOW, flashback to 2007.

    The relationship between Larry Miller and Greg is very strong. If he ever resigns with Portland this will be the reason why.
