Documents published online this month show that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization known for its uncompromising animal-rights positions, killed more than 95 percent of the pets in its care in 2011.

The documents, obtained from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, were published online by the Center for Consumer Freedom, a non-profit organization that runs online campaigns targeting groups that antagonize food producers.

Fifteen years’ worth of similar records show that since 1998 PETA has killed more than 27,000 animals at its headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

In a February 16 statement, the Center said PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year, finding homes for only 24 pets.

You do realize that about half of all animals that wind up in a shelter are put down, right? I always find it weird when people bitch about PETA, holding them accountable for unethical behavior, yet are unwilling to look into the way the bacon they had for breakfast reached their refrigerator.

I'm no PETA apologist. But it seems like they are the only ones out there saying shit like in this video is wrong, so I tend to cut them a little slack:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCcUV-Yg-bc

I've been hunting since I was probably six. So I'm not squeamish about dispatching animals. But I feel whatever PETA has done wrong in the past pales in comparison to shit like that.

Anyway, the article is really kind of weird. This quote seems strange to me:
Why are they bringing up an event from 7 years ago in one van to describe an entire organization?

I've never heard of the site "The Daily Caller," but when one of the main menu headings is "Guns and gear" I tend to take it with a grain of salt.

The only source referenced in the article is something called "The Center for Consumer Freedom." That, I'm sure we're all shocked to find out, is funded by Tyson Foods, Wendys, Phillip Morris, and a number of restaurant groups who probably have an axe to grind with PETA.

So, in the end, what are we to think? Are PETA a group of vicious bloodthirsty hypocritical hippies trying to make a buck while gleefully killing critters behind the scenes without mercy? *shrug* Maybe. But I wouldn't believe I got the full context from this article.

Ranchers and research labs kill 100% of the animals in their "care".

With your propensity for "lesser evils" I'd expect you to applaud PETA.

Keep in mind ALL animals in PETA's care were rescued from certain death, so a more accurate thread title would be PETA saves hundreds of animals from certain death.

It's a little ironic reading this thread, while I am eating my bacon this morning, and juicy rare steak sandwich in the afternoon. I love eating flesh!

We already know that pounds have to kill almost all animals turned over to them. All that Denny's article says is that PETA, not the local taxpayers, runs a pound in Norfolk, VA.

PETA should turn the pound over to the local government so they won't be blamed for the inevitable. This will free the nation's liberal contibutors from paying the bills of Norfolk's richest 1%, the ones who think they pay almost all taxes.

Lieds animal shelter, near Las Vegas, is a "low kill" shelter. They were a no kill shelter until recently they had to put down 1000 animals due to a virus outbreak. They house 50,000 animals.

PETA isn't saving 1/2 the animals in their care, they're killing 95% of those animals.

We have 3 cats. Got one form Lieds, rescued a feral kitten stuck in a drainage pipe, and got the other from here http://www.animalcenter.org/

So the population of Las Vegas is 583,000 humans and at least 50,000 animals. This animal shelter has almost 10% the population of the whole city. Who funds it? Who bought the land? Are you sure this can be duplicated elsewhere, and that desert doesn't cost less than property elsewhere?

Vegas is in a valley. In spite of it being in the desert, about all the available land was sold for construction by 2008.

Lieds is a privately funded non-profit. The Greenspuns are big contributors, tho they charge fees for adoption to help cover costs.

I linked to a similar shelter in San Diego, which has a 3M population.

Lieds is a few temporary buildings and tents. The San Diego shelter is privately funded and is like a cross between a hospital and a glitzy casino.

They do keep the animals in cages...

But they also have rooms like this where the animals get to spend some time

PETA is like NOW and other groups whose main goal is money and political power. And to justify their true intents, they have a shelter or two along the way to save face.

It's a sham. Like almost all special interest groups.

I think PETA is just lead by people who have other issues they aren't addressing. Animals should be treated humanely and if they are raised for food, not trapped in a cage their entire life. Pets, who cares as long as they are kept warm, fed, and not abused physically. real fur, kind of weird to think about, but its probably our oldest source of clothing.

I've always wondered why PETA doesn't demonstrate against leather. I see no difference between that and fur.

That said, I do support humane treatment of animals.

I think we should kill animals slowly because we can. It's the right thing to do.

P.S. Blazer Prophet, my ex's mom was a die hard vegetarian. She said she became one because she doesn't like how animals are being slaughtered for food when people can survive without eating them.

Anyways, I saw her leather belt, shoes and purse and asked her why she wears leather. She didn't know how to answer.

Can I send you 40 animals each month, every month, until we get this figured out?

That's how many Oregon shelters typically accept from overloaded California shelters. Blaming PETA for irresponsible pet owners who let their pets multiply then abandon them seems very Republican.
