Hickson will now have full Bird rights, allowing them to re-sign with their teams for any amount up to the maximum salary.

Good news for us. I like the way Hickson fit in. I wonder if that will affect the Freeland talks (or trade interest).

I guess it is best for the individual players and their teams (of which we are of course one of the few).

Probably not affect Freeland, but I think it will lessen the 'need' to draft a big man as BPA

Good, but let's not break the bank for J.J. Hickson.

Good news! Never thought I would be excited to find out we could have a better chance at re-signing Hickson. And now the Knicks can over pay for Lin.

This topic is going crazy on teh twitterz. It sounds like nobody on the players'/agents' sides expected this result.

Having options is always good, but IMO this also increases the likelihood that we overpay for Hickson, and might possibly cause us to spend cap-space on him (matching another team's offer) rather than using it on a free agent.

Ya, that's a concern. I'll be curious to see if a team is willing to gamble and promise him the starting PF spot and starter $$$ after how good he played at the end of the season.

Good point. And of course none of our local media will talk about this factor.

Except that neither Freeland nor Hickson are really centers. They do play them on TV though.

I could still see Drummond big in the mix. If anything, maybe they are less likely to overpay for Robinson. Robinson forces LMA to move to C; Hickson/Freeland, even though they are not centers, would be more likely to fit at the 5.

According to ShamSports, his cap hold would only be 3.3M.

I was shocked when Sacramento released him and no one else claimed him before Portland did. The 19 games he played for us statistically look more like his last year in Cleveland than they do his time with the Kings. On most nights we can get away with JJ and LA on the court at the same time.

We will see what marquee players will consider Portland, but doubt we will have to renounce JJ in order to make a better signing. Being able to start him at the same price any other team can offer with bigger raises and a fifth year should make him a Blazer next season.
