As I understand it, teams under the camp do not get an MLE. When is the deadline for being under or over the cap. i.e. If we are above the cap on say July 15, do we get an MLE for this year? do we have any other exemptions this year?
I believe if we go over the cap this offseason, we have to renounce all exceptions when we complete the transaction that pushes us over the cap. For example, say we end up with Hibbert, and then match on Batum. At the moment we match Batum and go over the cap, all exceptions are renounced for this offseason. This is my understanding anyway.
I thought this year they made a revision to the CBA allowing teams the MLE if they went over the cap by a certain date
Maybe. I had a lot of the significant items in the old CBA down pat. I haven't even spent a moment looking at the new CBA.
Yeah, ya kinda are. But after you mentioned that change, I vaguely do remember something about that. But like I said, I haven't spent any time reviewing the new CBA, so I'm not sure. I need to stop responding about to CBA questions, as I have very little knowledge on the items that have changed (or at least could have).
You have to renounce the full MLE to get under the cap. The full MLE is $5 million, or $3 million for luxury tax teams. To offer Hibbert an offer sheet we will have to renounce the MLE for the 2012-13 season. Once we are over the cap, the new CBA now has a "room" exception. This is a $2.5 million exception that can be used for a 2 year contract so $5.1 million in total. This is only available to teams that renounced their MLE to get under the cap. Last season the Knicks got under the cap, signed Chandler, then used their room exception to sign JR Smith.
I thought you lose the MLE but it's a different, smaller exception, like $2.5-2.75mil or something. But I know less about the new CBA than you do -- I'm just repeating something I pulled from the cobwebs of my mind. Could be completely wrong. In which case -- Nevermind! (/Roseanne Roseanna Dana)
OK, I checked. You are correct sir! I'm going to quit while I'm behind. Edit: Lisa Loopner, LOL. How could I forget that! We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. In the meantime, I'm going to hit youtube.
