Wait....you can either pay nic 45M over the next 4 years, or pay Webster 600k after waiving his non-guaranteed contract and Williams 15M?

Why would we reject that?! Unless Neil thinks he can get picks, also?

Olshey is milking this to get more out of Minnesota. I'd do that trade in a heartbeat. still have cap space and we get a lottery pick. :MARIS61:

Or another reason Batum's agent is doing this is because

    (read this on BE)

Batum wanting to leave is bogus

How else was his agent supposed to sell the timberwolves on signing Nic. He had to tell them that he would rather play for them. Blazers told Nic’s agent to go find a deal and so he had to go sell his client on playing somewhere else…

Makes a bunch of fucking sense to me

Why would Minnesota bother signing him to an offer sheet if they didn't believe he really wanted to play there?

Nic's agent might actually be smart

Offensively, Gallinari is far superior to Batum.

How overrated Batum's D is, he is still vastly superior to Danilo.

But I'd take Williams and Webster, easily. Webster is a better backup than Babbitt, and I like D-Will's potential.

Hate 11+ mill for Batum. Awful.

That's always a good idea. Make the fan base against you. Genius.

Taking Williams and Webster is probably going to be better than what we would get if we let Batum just go then tank for a pick next year. 11+ is way too much for Batum, he has only shown flashes...not sure you can rely on him. If he wants to be in Portland and build with LA and whoever...fine. But if he wants to go to Minnesota, best of luck and hope we can do a S&T without taking back too much.

Oh, I know. But of the ways to get your salary, basically pissing on the fans is not the best way to get it.

To be 100% honest, if Batum didn't want to be here and REALLY wanted out, he'd take his QO and demand a trade for the year left on his contract. He wouldn't accept a 4 year/45 million contract that can easily be matched and then play it out. Ha.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

This is probably NBA Free Agency 101 (a class most of you obviously aced), but perhaps certain commentators should realize that the Blazers don't want to strike anything resembling a final deal with Batum right away for at least one reason: they don't want to effectively outbid themselves if the Timberwolves were just putting up an enormous smokescreen.

It's not in Batum's interest to hastily reach a deal - even a tentative one - with the Blazers, either, because for all he knows, the Blazers might've still undervalued him. Say he asks the Blazers for an offer. Say the Blazers offer five years (which Minnesota can't do), at $8 mil a year? $40 mil over five years is a lot of money, but how does he know if it's "market value" without getting the Timberwolves to start the bidding?

I think many of us would, but Olshey might be trying to get picks. MIN has MEM's top-14-protected 2013 and their own from 2013-18. They also nave (among others) NOH's 2014 2nd.

Gimme Wes Johnson, Derrick Williams, and 2 first round picks and we have a deal.

If it were, say, Darius Miles, I'd agree. But Nic is really pretty lovable, I suspect if he comes back and plays well, all will very quickly be forgiven and forgotten.

Hurts our ability to sign Hibbert for the max. Williams and the picks (or Williams/Webster-being-cut/picks) works.

That is too greedy. Forget about the draft picks. I will take Williams and anyone else on the team.

Nope. If it's a sign and trade, he wouldn't have to sign the offer sheet. He signs with us, we trade him. We can wait until after Hibbert is matched/not matched.

Need to be greedy. DIVISION rival.
