My take on this regardless of whether or not Batum signs a QO, and whether or not Blazers match:

Kahn is similar to the Timbertrolls....... douchey.

Unless Portland bends over on a crappy trade (which doesn't appear to be happening)....

Match is fine. Doesn't cripple, Nic's not horrible, can maybe improve a lot.

Don't match and let him walk? I'd be upset. He's an asset with value. But I don't think there's any way this happens.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

I will be fine either way... neither is an optimal outcome (signing him more cheaply or getting value for him would be better than the keep/lose options involved with a match) but I like him, he has upside, and we have a super-rich owner.... and we still have some cap space coming up, so overpaying him isn't the end of the world by any stretch.

Losing him for nothing wouldn't be too bad, either, because I'd be excited to see what the team could do with those cap dollars over the next few summers after this initial frenzy of (IMO) overpayment dies down.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear since a few of you guys miss-understood.

What would your take be if the matched?

ok, now what would your take be if they didn't match?

I have a feeling people's feelings on the situation will change depending on if it's matched or not. Little revisionist history going on... In the future that is... :dunno:

Sorry, you were clear, I was multitasking and didn't fully read.

If we match, I'm very happy. If we don't match and just let him walk, I'll be pissed.

I'd be fine if they matched

If they let him walk for nothing I would probably be ok as well because it would give us a lot of cap space to either A) Offer a FA next season. B) Complete a lopsided trade for a high salary this year or next off season.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

It seems like a pretty straightforward and fair question to me... ASSUMING the Wolves sign him to an offer sheet (which will take some finagling, it looks like, but isn't crazy), there are two potential outcomes. S&T is unavailable. QO is unavailable. Cheaper contract is unavailable.

Two outcomes. It doesn't mean that those two outcomes are equally likely, but they both exist.

How would you, as a Blazers fan, react to each of them?

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

To be fair, its pretty obvious how most would feel on both accounts.

Match, we get to keep our player andlaugh at Kahn, could be we change our mocking t something like Klown, hmm, naw why fuck with something that works so well

Dont match, doubt it, but that does give us monies to play in the FA market abd weed through the guys that get released, make trades, no biggie

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

How is not matching a good outcome if S&T option that's been reported is essentially a non-guaranteed contract and a couple of draft picks? You keep your cap space with the S&T but you get some tradable assets.

An offer sheet without a match is not a good outcome. It may be palatable, but it means that Olsney overplayed his hand.

or could be that we never believeed that Nic was worth the amount that he gets offered? Kind of a moot point, Kahn cant make the reported offer at this time.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

At this point I would call Nic on his cell and bypass his agent and say "Nic this whole process has been ridiculous, we see you as a valuable member of our future, and we are prepared to offer you a 5 year 50 million contract."

That would be about 1 million more a year than he is worth. But he would be locked in for 5 years. I think at this point he is tired of the whole thing as much as we are and the shiny new toy of Adelman/Rubio has worn off.

Not even close to the same thing. Both of the options I present are possible and will be the choices that Olshey will have to pick from.

Howard will never play in Portland and Jordan will never be 25 again. You're the one living in fantasy land.

Props to the TWolves for making one helpful move for this Blazers. This now gives Portland one more business day to sign free agents and makes uneven trades. Time to sign CJ Watson, any amnesty players or make a trade! Then resign Nic and call it good.

Re: Nic 4 years, 46.5 Million

I've argued over on RealGM that this is exactly what Olshey should have done a couple days ago when this all started getting messy.

Offer 5/50mil, but make as much of it front loaded as legally possible, thus conserving cap space for next summer. Money now is worth more than money later, so I'm sure Batum would be happier.
