My point is that it is fair, not necessarily a good deal. I also didn't say we should match, though I think in this case we should. I specifically mentioned that

Nah. Anyone who presents something as fact when the facts aren't clear should be forced to back it up.

There are 5 other SFs clearly way over-paid on the SF list you provided before. Now that new deals are made in accordance to the new CBA; I suspect 9-10 mil will be a top 10 type salary for SFs. There are exceptions like the Melo and LJs playing the game. They are in that "Superstar pay" category. I think 12 mil per is a guaranteed all star caliber player. You think Batum will be able to be an all star?

    Boarderline

23 year old SF with his PER is tough to argue paying him 11ish

Gerald Wallace, who isn't the player Batum is, just got 9.5, and he is much older too

What's crazy is even 2-3 years ago, the current version of Nic would have gotten a maximum of 8 mill/year. Now it's a possibility he'll get 150% of that. Crazy CBA...

Didn't G-Dub sign for $40mil/4 years (so $10mil/year)? Not that it's a huge difference, but still....

Crazy Kahn. I'm sure Nic wouldn't have gotten that type of offer from anyone else even though many teams were interested. Kahn is looking to exact some sort of revenge, and it worked. He's hurt himself in the process, but it still hurt us, too.

What gets me is the quibbling over whether Nic is worth 9-10mil or 11mil. What's that 2 million a year going to get us? So maybe he's a little overpaid (to some)... big deal. That two million isn't getting us a needle mover.

Also, since it's Minny's offer we're matching, the raises are much smaller year-to-year than if we had made the offer; it's a blessing in disguise that he'll be making 11, 11.33, 11.66, 12.33 (ish) rather than the potential 10, 11, 12, 13.5 (ish). Consistency between years is nice. The trade kicker is a sonuvabitch, but he's not going anywhere, most likely.

EDIT: My math is worse than MM2.0's, so I apologize in advance if I have this HORRIBLY wrong. If it's a little wrong... ehn, whatever.

I don't think it really hurt the Blazers that much. Nic's really only overpaid by about $1M-2M per year.

It's just the 7-figures vs. 8-figures average value - to me it's a jump, but that's partially just cuz of how I think in my industry.

Still, I'd rather have Batum at $11.625mil/season than G-Dub at $10mil/season. My opinion would not change even if G-Dub were 2 years younger than he is now.

And when Nic steps up his game with Sarge gone, he won't be overpaid, even if he's considered $1-2 million overpaid now.

ESPN's The Sports Guy, Bill Simmons, took a chunk of time out of his BS Report podcast today to talk NBA free agency, and more specifically, the sparring match between the Blazers and Timberwolves surrounding the signing of Nicolas Batum. You can listen to the entire podcast (Batum talk starts around the 50-minute mark):

"Minnesota vs. Portland ... it's kind of a blood feud over Nicolas Batum." said Simmons. "The league is going in a certain direction ... Nicolas Batum is someone who does two things that you need to be able to do in this league going forward. He can make threes, and he can guard wing guys. And yet, you would never think of him as somebody who would make eight figures a year... he's overpaid, but I'm actually okay with that contract."

Simmons continues... "He's 20-23.... You might be buying low with him because of the way they used him. They just planted him in the corner, and he wasn't actually playing basketball that much."

Bill Simmons and his buddy "House" go on to discuss the Roy Hibbert contract, and why they feel Batum is the type of player that could turn out to be a better deal down the road. On another note, a flash from the past ... I had the chance to talk with Simmons in 2009 during his book signing tour where he talked about The Book of Basketball, his fans and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Yeah; depending on the coach, Nic might suddenly be the focus of a motion-oriented offense, the point-forward who keeps Lillard out of trouble and the offense moving smoothly. Responsibility, trust, and a big paycheck can forgive a lot of sins.
