On one hand, it's nice to see the players all want to play for and buy into one system, but on the other hand I don't know if the players should really like the coach, just respect. How would you feel if Kaleb got the position?
Young players on a bad team should have almost no say on who the coach should be. There's no Magic Johnson or LeBron James on this team. Ed O.
If they truly respect him and he can teach them how to play and also keep them accountable, then I have no problem with Olshey deciding to hire Canales ... the only hangup I see is that he's probably not as qualified as some of the other candidates that have interviewed for the job. Even if they don't give him the head-coaching gig, you have to believe that he'll be retained as an assistant in some capacity with the organization.
Mike Rice answered this exact question on Courtside and gave an emphatic "No!" He said that players have a different agenda and them liking a coach is not the most important attribute to worry about.
Absolutely, Yes. We should hire a coach who is willing to taken on KC as an assistant or in a player development position of some sort. Keep KC working with the players.
My ideal situation would have: HC: Mike D'Antoni AC/Assistant Head Coach: Mike Dunleavy-Defensive Tactician AC: Phil Weber-Offensive Tactician AC: Kaleb Canales-Video Coordinating/Player Development AC: Tim Grgurich Player Development Interestingly, I think they are all Legarie clientelle
Should they? No. Will they? Hope not. Is he the most qualified of the dozen or more they are interviewing? Certainly not. Should they keep him as AC? Don't care.
No kidding. My hunch is that since it is a Blazer broadcast, they were given orders to prime the pump.
The thing is, the way that Kaleb talks about the team and the way that the team talks about him, it wouldn't surprise me at all that he's kept as the HC. It's almost like he's had the job the whole time and this coaching search is just a dog and pony show.
We're not going to win anything, so why not? The Thunder stuck with Scott Brooks, and they've done okay.
Batum wanted to play under Adelman and that was the reason why he wanted to play in MN. He played under Kaleb and that sure didn't change his position in free-agency. Kind of a contradiction IMO. D'Antoni or bust!
