On TrueHoop David Thorpe (after drooling over Alexey Shved - I SAID we should've signed him while the Wolves had their cap space tied up with Batum) suggested that the Rockets would (a) still be interested in Pau Gasol, but (b) need a third party, and he explicitly mentioned Portland. Ideas?

Not exactly sure what we can offer at this point.

We have expirings to give up. Toss us in the trade give expiring contracts and take back Blake and Jones and whatever else they want to dump on us.

At this point, the Rockets would have to include their entire non-Harden tradeable roster in order to make a deal for Gasol (since Lin and Asik are not tradeable yet). So right now, this would work.

Our three expirings are only equal to about 4.7 million... why would we want to waste them on whatever crap (IE Blake) that we would get back in that deal?

I doubt we do anything that will help the Lakers. Unless of course we are getting a "Harding-type" player in return. And since that is a pipe-dream; the deal or rumored talks is a pipedream as well.

    Hickson is a $4 million expirer. Babitt is 1.9, Jeffries 1.5, Elliot 1.4, Nolan 1.4, Sasha 1.2.
    11.4 in expirings.

That's a great deal for us. Just ship out our entire shitty bench and swap in a pretty decent one.

I don't think LA does it though, as they add our shitty bench onto their shitty bench. I suppose if they really want to unload Gasol's huge contract though....

This is my crazy trade.... it's absolutely crazy. I would also include Motiejunas but he's not on the ESPN roster.

We end up with a roster of:

    Lillard/Douglas/Price
    Gordon/Wes/Barton/Cook
    Batum/MKG/Pavlovic
    Hickson/Jones/Jeffries
    Leonard/Aldrich/Motiejunas

Gives us shooting, strengthens our bench, and adds another young prospect in MKG where he will eventually start at SF with Batum at shooting guard.

Any deal to be worth it for us would have to include Motiejunas and Jones. After watching those guys in the summer league, I would love to have them on our team.

Seems like any deal with us would almost need to wait until the 15th of Dec. to work, being able to add in our other expirings(Pavlovic, Jeffries, Hickson).
Outside of that, I'm not sure what role we play in the deal. Did he mention what role the 3rd party was taking? Seems like all of the value to be added in a trade in the way of prospects comes from Houston. So why wouldn't LA just take those players.

Well, I'm guessing they're trying to shed salary. Gasol is making 19+ million a year over the next two seasons. If they could give him up without taking much back, that would be appealing I guess.

Houston is 7 million under the cap, so they can at least shed SOME salary. But even still, it's not like we have tons of space to take on salary either. Our expirings don't help much, when they can take expirings from houston, or young players who are intriguing.

LA isn't trying to shed salary, they're trying to win this year and next. Any trade where they get any of our players would some talent (i.e. Wes Matthews or Aldridge) going back to them.

They're not going to trade gasol for a bunch of bench scrubs. They do need 3 point shooting in D'Antoni system, maybe they want Wes Matthews. Slide Kobe to the 3 and put MWP on the bench. but they aren't trading Gasol for someone that's not better than Gasol. That's just how they roll.

If there's a 3 way with the rockets and lakers, I think the 3rd team is Atlanta with Josh Smith going to LA, Gasol to Houston and Hawks getting expiring contracts and youth.

In that scenario, I almost feel like Houston would rather just add Smith.

    Basically

Gasol , 2 Portland fillers to Houston

Aldridge 2 Portland fillers to LAL

    Montejunas
    Jones
    White
    Cook
    Aldrich
    Douglas

Houston sends Raptors 2013 1st round (Top 3 protected and 15-30 in 2013, top 2 protected and 15-30 in 2014 and '15, Top 1 protected and 15-30 in 2016 and '17, and unprotected in 2018)

Houston sends 2014 1st round pick to Portland

Lakers send 2015 2017 unprotected 1st round picks to Portland

Next season Portland would have 33.4 mm in salary, 12 players under contract with Hickson still a Bird rights guy. Would also have more than likely 2 lottery picks . Say 3 and 5 for shits and giggles as well as enough money for two near max players, or a lopsided as hell trade

Roster would look something like this?

    PG
    Lillard

    SG
    Matthews
    Cook

    SF
    Batum
    Claver

    PF
    Hickson
    McAdoo
    Jones
    White

    C
    Noel
    Leonard
    Freeland
    Motijunas

Still with all kinds of money to spend
