Lakers on the ropes right now, down five with three minutes left in Cleveland.

Would Varejao be the first Brazilian All-Star in league history?

    Lakers fall to 9-13.

They only had 10 assists with 18 turnovers tonight.

Dwight even made 13 of 22 FT's. But when you have two starters with 2 points apiece, and they have three starters with 20+ points...

Kyrie Irving tonight looked like the best PG in the league!

Damn, Blake Griffin just put Marco Belinelli on a poster with an alley-oop dunk, catching the ball behind him and finishing over his back!

He might be an annoying flopper who won't have a career once his knees catch up with him, but you've got to enjoy those kind of plays while he can still make them. Very few players come around that can consistently provide highlight reels like Griffin. It's Reignman-esque.

Lillard being as good as he is, is making my season, but the Lakers implosion is a very solid second!

They've turned Dwight into a role player.

He is also clearly not the same athlete with his back injury. Very slow lift.

True, but even with 20/20 hindsight, bringing Dwight in was still a good move. Would you rather have Andrew Bynum at this point?

...then you've still successfully dodged the Andrew Bynum contract negotiation bullshit and start to make a play for someone like Kevin Love, because if history has shown us anything, regardless of cap room or assets, the Lakers can always acquire the best players from small market teams in return for nothing, right?

I hate to double-post, but I was thinking about the Lakers being the league's vultures that hover around small market franchises and just pick off their assets, and that reminded me of the Pau Gasol trade.

The Pau Gasol trade that more or less gave LA two titles, yet a lot of people nowadays point out that the Grizzlies got the rights to Marc Gasol in that deal, and how Marc's become a better player than Pau.

That was just blind luck as far as I'm concerned though. When Marc was playing high school ball in Memphis, he was 50 lbs. overweight, couldn't run down the floor, and seemed disinterested with the game. The only things he had going for him were his size and name. I don't think that bringing him in to the organization was as much of a basketball decision as it was a decision to appease that Gasol family. The fact that he developed into one of the league's best big men couldn't have been foreseen by the league's best scouts.

The reality was that the Grizzlies pretty much sold Pau Gasol, the face of the franchise and their only All-Star at the time, for an expiring Kwame Brown contract.

The Lakers will always find ways to exploit the smaller markets' financial crises for their own gain.

From what I remember, Pau had really worn out his welcome in Memphis. The fans were booing him mercilessly. It doesn't help the team make the best trade when other teams can make "take it or leave it" offers.

I remember being furious at the Bulls because they were in talk for Gasol and wouldn't include Deng (they offered Andres Nocioni, Tyrus Thomas, Thabo Sefalosha, Adrian Griffin, Joakim Noah and picks). In hindsight, Memphis would have been stuck with some pretty awful guys and late draft picks, plus Noah. At the time, there was no indication Noah would be as good as he's turned out.

Also in retrospect, Ray Allen was traded to Boston for a draft pick (Jeff Green), Delonte West, and Wally Szerbiak. Not the Lakers, Boston.

Similarly, Garnett was traded for Al Jefferson, Gomes, Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, and a couple of draft picks.

DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended one game without pay for "striking" Dallas Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo in the groin area.
