    At this point, I think I would go after Jefferson. He JUST turned 28, so he's still relatively young, he's a stat monster and maybe we could sign him and someone like Redick to come in here. I think Jefferson and Aldridge could play together.

    If we could bring in guys without giving anything up, that's what we should be doing. Jefferson and Redick would give this team some more veteran experience and maybe we could get a couple other guys for the bench. With Lillard, Redick, and Batum spreading the floor, I think Aldridge and Jefferson could tear it up in the paint.

    That lineup has one good defender in it, in Batum. I'd personally prefer defensive role players at the 2 and 5, with a bolstered bench.

    Like who? I'd try to bring in some defensive players for the bench that could be rotated in as needed, but I think we should look at this cap space as we would look at the draft.

    I think you go BPA in the draft because it is young and cheap talent. I don't think you just sign the best guy you can in free agency, position be damned. You build in draft, and fill in through free agency. Just adding a good player, regardless of fit seems foolish to me. Going out and dropping 8-9 million on someone like Jefferson who is not a good defender, and who just forces Aldridge more time where everyone hates him seems like not an ideal use of cap space to me.
    Just having good defenders on the bench then just puts the requirement for scoring solely on the starters. We have that situation this season. I'd prefer a slight decrease in scoring from our starters if it meant we had one decent bench scorer.

    Jefferson seems like an awful fit. Replicates Aldridge's scoring, and lack of defense and pairing them up would only take touches away from the other. It would be an expensive upgrade from what Hickson provides without actually fixing one of the key issues with this team- interior defense.

    Aldridge and Jefferson would work amazingly on offense. Replicates Aldridge's scoring? They primarily score in very different ways.

    I wouldn't say very different at all. Jefferson scores SLIGHTLY more within 10 feet, Aldridge slightly more outside of that. But fairly close.
    My biggest issue with him, however, is his defense.

    So you want to spend ~$12 million a year on a player who scores slightly differently, and at the same FG%, from a guy you're already paying over $13 mil a year. And the new guy does nothing to improve the deficiencies of said player or the team?

    How about instead of adding Al Jeff to score down low and turning LMA into a full on stretch 4 (as much as he may enjoy that), you just run more plays for LMA on the block, since hes roughly as good as Al Jeff scoring down low anyway. Then you can use the money you saved to get a stretch big man and/or big who will actually help improve weaknesses of the team.

    I didn't say I wanted to do that at all. I was only commenting on how well I think they would work together on offense. But saying he wouldn't improve any weaknesses of the team is a little stupid. Are we the best at scoring in the paint? No? That's a weakness that Jefferson would address.

    The Raptors are after Pau Gasol.

    They could be a very interesting team with Lowry/Gay/Gasol.

    Maybe Pau will come out of this slump (or is it age?) when he gets away from that clusterfuck, oh, and playing with Kobe.

    The second half of the 2011 season he played like a center and was putting up 25+PPG. Easily the best low-post scoring big in the game. He truly beasted every big he faced.

    And then he rediscovered his feathery jumper.

    Why settle for throwing a bunch of money at the best guy you can get just for the sake of getting the best guy you can get regardless of not only what the team needs, but what it already has? Adding Al Jeff doesn't make your team a contender, and severely inhibits your team from making moves to get to that level. And LMA can do what he does just as well.

    But to answer your question, here's my post earlier in this thread:

    Other options:

    Sign a journeyman C to play defense, rebound and be big. Dalembert, Kwame Brown, Chris Kaman will be out there and cheap. You'll still have enough money for another addition or two by FA or trade. Not sexy, but it wouldn't tie your club down to any long term contracts, it would improve defense and rebounding, and you'd add depth. This would take you guys from fringe PO team, to certain PO team and maybe mid-playoff seed, and it wouldn't compromise you financial flexibility, which means you can jump at an opportunity to take the next step to becoming a contender.

    FAs aren't the only possibilities. We'll see what Olshey can do as far as acquiring more cap space, picks, or other assets at the deadline. Portland will among the most well equipped buyers this offseason.

    I honestly think very little will be gotten done in free agency in terms of impact players. Olshey will probably have better luck trying to work out a lopsided trade with a team that needs to shed payroll before the really draconian luxury tax penalties start to kick in.

    We will not have cap space again for a while, with Aldridge, Batum, and Lillard taking up a lot of cap space. We have a chance this summer to get a difference maker. When will we have that opportunity again? And adding Smith makes even less sense because that would require Aldridge to essentially play center, which he doesn't want to do. Batum is the small forward in our system, and Smith hasn't played small forward in years. At least Jefferson is a center.

    Also, why waste money on some scrub journeyman center when we could do that with the MLE next summer? We have a chance to throw a big contract on someone that will help move the needle.

    It makes a ton of sense if Aldridge wasn't a pussy. That lineup would be amazing, much better than any lineup we would have with Big Al.

    I agree with the mention of Dalembert. I think he's exactly the kind of player that we need at center while we develop Leonard, and he's (presumably) cheap. I'd trade for him now if Milwaukee would take Freeland for him.
