I don't think we can trade that pick though since we would guarantee Charlotte a pick the following year; meaning you can't trade a first rounder two years in a row.

we don't have cap space until after the draft, so July 1st(or 15th, whatever moratorium ends), rights to player X we drafted and cap space for McGee.

But from what I remember platypus saying is we owe Charlotte a first rounder this year or next; which is a traded pick. That means that you can trade our current pick this summer because you can't trade a first rounder two years in a row.

I think the rule is something along the lines of you can't have the possibility of not havin a pick two years in a row. We select someone on draft night, then we had a pick, thereafter, we're trading a player, not a pick.

we cannot trade a first rounder before 2018, because of the protections on it., and the fact that we don't have someone else's pick at some point.

I know he is a basket case, and Karl says he is lazy, but he would be a huge upgrade for us

That's clever, RR7, and I think you're right. The Stepien rule specifically applies to future picks. So, if we make a pick, we could then trade the rights to the player after the start of the next CBA year.

That's some loop hole. Curious if that's true.

If it is, then that changes everything.

that loophole is right. You cannot make a trade that even possibly gives up your right to make a selection in two consecutive years. For instance, we have a "possibility" of giving up our 2013 pick, so we couldn't have traded both of our 2012 picks away last winter. Once draft day rolled around, we could have selected our players and immediately traded them regardless of the 2013 pick, because we'd already "made a selection." It doesn't have to wait until new CBA year.

Since there's a possibliity of this year's pick going away, we can't trade it. We also can't trade the 2014, because we might give up the 2013 and then we wouldn't be able to select in 2014, either. That continues until a) CHA actually selects with our pick, or b) 2018. (The protection runs out in 2016, so it's guaranteed to go to CHA that year if they haven't received it yet. therefore we can't trade the 2017 pick, b/c that would make 2 selections consecutively that we wouldn't have the right to make)

Once CHA gets the 2013 pick, then we can start trading away 2015 and farther. But not until then.

Yeah, I guess it does. We can agree in principle to a deal with another team which includes our pick, but not actually consummate the deal until after the pick is made, and still technically be within the rules.

However, when we make the playoffs, none of this will matter.

Lol! I'm actually thinking at best case, we end up with 45 wins. You think that's enough to make the playoffs? This year is a trip because it actually seems like its enough. But looking back in history, it hasn't been enough on the west coast.

I think that's right about where the 8 seed will be, but I don't think we finish anywhere near that. Looking at the schedule in ABM's thread, I'm guessing only about 13 more wins the rest of the year, and a finish well below .500. Sadly I actually see us hitting no-man's land, either 13th or 14th worst in the league--just good enough to lose our pick, but not good enough to make the playoffs. :sigh:

If that is the case then POR will do some creative tanking (resting Batum - which really isn't tanking since he needs it bad) to get down to at least 12th worst so we keep our pick. And technically there is a small chance we could get top 3 even if landed in 13th or 14th pick.
