That years from now, the bible (and in theory Christianity), will be proven to be nothing but a bunch of made up stories?
Actually they were worse than third grade level. Even through the dark ages, man needed others to read the story. Not until Gutenberg developed the printing press was when the common man could read. And even then it was a small %
that's an argument against christianity, not for it. the more we explain the seemingly miraculous using science the less need there is for god.
i thought my point was pretty clear, its not different at all the problem is i cant re-write the law book by myself and call it the true truth
That is soooo far from the truth. This is why even today's scientist still have many theist in prominent positions in science. If you think that science has proven whats in the bible wrong, than why are their agnostics? Its because many that dont believe in God, will not rule out there maybe God.
Serious question.... If scientists are supposedly the most rational man, and science only disproves the existence of God, then why would any scientist, being rational and all, believe in God? You guys are claiming science has only disproved the bible, yet there are many scientists that are still christians. Seems like a total contradiction no? I mean if it has been disproven without a shadow of doubt, then why does a rational man still believe?
Believing in god does not mean you believe in the bible. I wholeheartedly believe the bible is a book of mythology and historical fiction. On god, I'm agnostic.
I used a "keyword".... I said there are still christians in science. The ones that believe the bible is the word of god.
i wasnt talking about reading... although clearly if these idiots could be read the bible, then they could be read any sort of book no? and help me out mags, how does the "teach an idiot how planes work" thing relate to christianity again?
I thought i already explained it. Lets assume that you are trying to describe your witness of an angel ascending to heaven. What if that "angel" was actually an alien type person that used a space craft. Assume that no one back then has even seen our modern planes, yet they need to describe a space craft. You would describe them like the only thing you can associate with flying. You describe a bird, with wings, able to fly into space.
i commented on this earlier in this thread. scientists are still human. most of them are still raised by religious parents in religious cultures. they still have the capacity as non-scientists do to compartmentalize cultural beliefs and not subject them to the same standards or rationality that they would use in their profession. in fact, i'd ask you how you would explain why a much lower percentage of scientists are theists than of the general public. General US public it's something like 75%. Latest poll of Scientists it's only 28%, and in an older poll of the members of the National Academy of Sciences it's only 7%. If you concede that scientists generally speaking tend to be more rational than the general public why would those numbers be so much lower?
oh so god is an alien and we are his slaves that actually makes a lot more sense so why are you stumping for the bible?
I'm not sure what you're trying argue here. This example is just like Zeus and lightning. They would be making up a supernatural (angels) story to explain a real (aliens in this example) situation. This would disprove christianity, or at least that story from he bible.
By the same means you just explained why scientists are christians. Its pretty evident that the majority of science doesn't believe in God, and they instill a Godless universe to all those that study in science. But it seems more wondrous that a scientist still believes in God. They are now accepted into a profession that embraces those that renounce the existence of a god, yet they still believe, even knowing that they will be mocked and ridiculed by their peers.
Well of course hes an alien! Was he a product of this planet? An alien are those that live outside of earth. Obviously God is outside this earth.
You aren't looking at the forest through the trees. It does nothing of the sort. I have said all along that i have faith that one day science and christianity will be working together. In order to explain the unexplainable, you use metaphors like poetry to give the common people the picture then.
