It's not like Portland has to spend their money this offseason

I mean I count them at 42.4 in salaries for next year not including a lottery pick, so add another 1.8 and call it 44 million. That is with a roster of

    Aldridge
    Lillard
    Batum
    Matthews
    Leonard
    Freeland
    Claver
    Barton
    Lottery pick

If Portland strikes out on a player they really want this summer, why couldn't they simply deal Hickson for someone like Iggy? Then fill out the roster accordingly, take the next step into the playoffs with the 7-8 seed and then have another go at FA with max money again?

2014 list of FA is a little bit sexier than the 2013 class. Plus we would have another asset in Iggy to S&T if we so chose to do that

I'm not against that one bit MM. It would also give us a better idea of what the team truly needs too. Lillard is a rookie, Stotts is in his first year, who knows how Leonard will do with another year and we get a guaranteed first rounder.

43.3 MIL if we don't bring back Maynor, and Hickson. (won't bother mentioning the other guys who expire as well because they have no chance of coming back imo - even Babbitt)

That doesn't take into account our draft pick however. So if adding your 1.8 then that puts us at 45.1 MIL.

Of course this is filling out the team with minimum salary players and probably not making the playoffs again.

    Cap is expected to be?

Aren't you of the opinion that a one and done playoffs is the worst senario. Why not just not spend money, tank, get a draft pick and a max player two years from now? (Serious question)

I added the draft pick in

Cap is expected to be 60mm

Why would you bring back Maynor or Hickson as anything more than a luxury? Neither are worth anything long term to this team

Olshey said Sunday that without a doubt we will be spending our money this year. He also said that he has really had to fight Paul in keeping him patient and that his job security is pretty shaky without 50 wins.

I am absolutely of that opinion.

As for tanking, I am always against it. I would never want the team to lose on purpose. I just think when you really have little hope in making the playoffs, why not start playing young guys. If they win, great

Your original number is where we differ. What site did you get your salary info from? It isn't that big of a deal though. Only of .9 MIL vs each other.

And I didn't factor them in. I said without them. I disagree that you can make the playoffs with your plan however.

That makes no sense. Olshey was hired because of his plan, which was to rebuild the proper way. If Olshey said that he was either lying or someone didn't hear him correctly

He has said in other interviews that PA was on board with the rebuild

Why not wait until 2015? We will only have 19 million! We can max 3 players! :P

Also, even if you don't have guys signed don't you have cap holds for 13 players at average salaries? So what I mean is if you only have 8 guys signed through next year, you would have cap holds of 5 imaginary guys since those positions have to be filled anyways.

This reminds me of when the Lakers were gearing up to bring Shaq to L.A. I saw so many 1 year contracts, the year before they made the great signing.

I mean before they are signed. You have cap holds. In this scenario it doesn't matter much because you aren't trying to spend all your money on a stud but that is why they put those in. So you couldn't cut a bunch of minimum guys then sign a big stud with your free money and then sign all the little guys back.

2014 is the year but LA and (IIRC) NY both will have cap room making it hard on small markets.

I think you still make a run at RFA this summer - Pekovic and Evans.

Pekovic would be the worst fit. I wonder what people see in him to think he'd be a good center for us?

All the big name Centers that will be available are a bad fit which is odd.

I'm all for being patient and postponing their move until next summer. I know that probably means another year of sucking, with a long-shot shot at the playoffs, but if there's nothing worth going after now, then they'd be sort of foolish to tie themselves to to a lot of guaranteed money on parts that don't fit together or get them where they want to go.
