    Did you read the thread?

The Niners also get a 2nd or 3rd rounder next season. Awesome.

I sort of skimmed but I think I hit every post. Might have confused which team posters here are rooting for, but I know for sure a few people said it was a good trade for both teams. And I could swear there was one or two people who were pro-KC on it.

I gave KC props, given the available QB's in FA and the draft. They are getting more than their picks and money would provide them. But ultimately, as a Niners fan, I'm ecstatic. We have a ton of picks this year and next. This was a great deal for SF, but a wise deal for KC.

    KC seemed desperate here.

Niners would've had to take about a 9M cap hit for Smith, who wasn't going to play behind Kaepernick and wasn't going to like it. If the 49ers got a 2nd and a future 3rd/4th, then that's a steal.

Flynn's not getting waived while Wilson's making ~500k a year. When your two QBs take up 6M of the cap, you are in a very good position.

You just contradicted yourself in this post, IMO. You are talking about the Niners not being able to keep Smith as a backup, but then the Seahawks are in an okay spot? Flynn's 2013 contract hits the cap at $7.25MM. Smith's hit is $8.50MM.

    Wilson's hit is $682K.

    Kaep's is $1.4MM.

How is it that the Niners are really in that much of a different position than Seattle? The $1.25MM difference between Smith and Flynn ain't that great.

Oh, and Smith has actual performance to back it up. Flynn is pretty unknown at this point.

And next year's pick is 2nd/3rd round, not 3rd/4th (at least according to major media reports). I love this deal for the Niners, I like it for KC (given the current year draft and QB FA's).

Flynn will be traded. Guaranteed. The hawks won't get as much for him as the Niners got for Smith though. Too bad because Smith sucks IMO.

I am not nearly as up to speed on NFL cap as NBA, but it was my impression that SF is almost capped out while SEA has boatloads of room.

No, but when the fortyniners have 3M in cap space and the Seahawks have 19M there's a big difference in position, imo. Backup QB making 8.5M is a luxury at that point.

I'd submit that in general, guys like Flynn and Kolb and Cassel (hell, throw the Chazz Whitehurst abortion) with "upside" as backups to good QBs and systems get more in return than guys who've been proven to be mediocre-to-good-at-best.

Don't get me wrong, I think the niners made out like bandits here. They got some cap room AND draft picks. But I didn't think there was ANY WAY IN HELL that Smith was going to back up Kaepernick next year. And I don't think 30 other GMs and many NFL experts like Clayton thought so, either.

For tlong, if SF got 2 2nds for Smith, I don't think Flynn will bring that back. If it's even close to that, though, I think you have to pull the trigger---say, a 3rd and a 4th or for someone making big money (Revis? LOL)

Cap room is going to be a problem for the Niners going forward. They have an awful lot of pro bowlers to keep happy.

It's cool. I figured you didn't have all the facts (kinda hard to do when you're out on "travels".)

I haven't looked at the Niners cap room, but there has certainly been a lot of talk about the Niners pulling a similar trick to 1994, when they signed several key free agents (Deion Sanders, Gary Plummer, Ken Norton Jr., Rickey Jackson, and a few other very solid but aging vets playing their last season or two) and ran away with the Super Bowl. If that's the case, that would imply to me that they have some money to spend. I was expecting that their cap is tight, but they must have some flexibility somewhere, with some of the rumors I've been hearing about who the Niners are targeting. It certainly helps that Alex has been traded. Even better that they got such quality picks for him.

With the Niners having 12 picks (and possibly as many as 15) in this year's draft, there's speculation they'll make some trade for some vets (Revis has been mentioned as a potential target). It should be interesting. One thing you can no longer say: The NFC West is weak. I don't think AZ and the Rams are that far away, and some think that the Niners and SeaChix may be the two best teams in the NFC next season. So the NFC West may now be the class of the NFC.
