Is he even close to being the best big man at the moment though? I know he's leading the league in RPG, but every time I watch a Lakers game, he looks like a shell of his former self. That's what makes something like this hard. There are the class of players that are hurt now but will eventually be amongst the best, like Howard, Rose, Bynum, and Love. All four of those guys would be in my top 20 had it not been for their current injuries.
Just goes to show how few quality big men there are. He's had an "off" year and he still averages what.....17 and 12?
But his impact isn't there. I think a lot of those numbers are empty statistics. Every time I've gotten to see him play this year (which seems like every other night with how much they put LAL on tv), he's been largely inconsequential. Howard and Bynum are easily the best big men in the game, but I don't think I'd take either over Duncan, M. Gasol, or Noah, at the moment. If we're talking about next season, those guys vault into a whole nother universe than those three guys, but here and now, I'd pass on Howard for each of them.
He should definitely be considered, and he's a lot better than his statistical output. I wish we'd actually involve him more offensively, not just in terms of posting him up, but just letting the ball touch his hands on more possessions. It's just like every time he touches the ball offensively, we get some points, even if he's not the one scoring them. He's like a poor man's Hakeem, or in other words, he's his older brother with some balls. The only thing is, I wish Gasol were more aggressive on the boards. I think without Randolph in the same frontcourt, he'd probably be a 10+ rpg guy statistically, but those numbers would be just as empty as Howard's current rebounding total. Unlike Pau, Marc has a killer instinct, but for some reason, that doesn't always translate to crashing the glass like he should. He'll take charges, block shots, and do all of the hustle plays in between, but for some reason, he tends to let some boards go sometimes.
On ESPN during the Miami-Memphis game, they showed a graphic of the non-guards with the most assists, LeBron was #1 obviously, Batum was #2 and M. Gasol was #5.
If we are building a starting 5 and bench? Here is my team: PG: cp3, SG: harden, sf: lbj, pf: Aldridge, center: chandler Bench: Sg: Matthews, sf: batum, pf: millsap, center: Larry sanders.
So, Durant isn't even good enough to make you're bench. He'd be a hell of a 6th man. Talk about instant offense off the bench... BNM
If the idea is to build the best starting lineup, I think you'd be better off with a Tyson Chandler type than Dwight Howard. Even or better defense, much better attitude, currently better health, and much less selfishness on a team already overloaded with people that want their touches.
That's what I was thinking too. You can't have all 5 starters the teams designated scorer. It would be mass confusion.
