I was surprised that CBS kept replaying it over and over again. I didn't really catch what had happened at first, but you could just tell by the reactions of the Louisville players that it was something crazy. Word is that he told the Louisville guys not to worry about him and to just win the game. They definitely played their hearts out in that second half... probably what got them the W.
Yeah I've seen Livingston's injury too. The thing is, any really gruesome joint injury is going to be big trouble for a pro athlete. Broken bones aren't as worrisome because, assuming they're healed properly, the injury shouldn't really make a difference in the athlete's performance. I have no idea what else happened to this guy beyond the broken bone though, I've read the tibia actually broke in two places, and for all I know his knee may have given out as well. What I'm trying to say is, although this was harder to watch and more gruesome, its not necessarily as condemning as Livingston's injury because you just knew Livingston's knee was completely wrecked and that's a lot to come back from for high level athletes. From what I'm reading now it sounds like they're just calling it a broken bone, but its entirely possible that they haven't done an MRI yet. Yeah I was on the phone with my friend with the game on mute and only sort of paying attention to it and it seemed like nothing special was going on and all of a sudden three Louisville players are on their knees in the paint. It became apparent none of them were actually injured and something fucking weird was going on and once they started showing the replay I somehow just knew it was going to be BAD.
Click on it to make it big. OH MY GOD! That is so nasty! Awesome in a slowing down to look at a traffic accident kind of way.
Don't, I am an idiot, I clicked, it made me physically cringe, cover my own eyes and utter a groan that may have actually meant something in Turkish.
Likewise. I saw that live, saw all the replays, and still, I don't think I actually ever really saw the bone protruding out of his leg like that. If I didn't know anything else about that picture, I would think it was fake. The crazy thing is that there wasn't any real contact. I'm wondering how your leg can snap and the bone can just shoot through your skin like that just by coming down awkwardly.
Alex Kennedy @AlexKennedyNBA Glad to hear Kevin Ware's surgery went well. His teammates brought the regional championship trophy to the hospital: pic.twitter.com/BKZ8jVs2IP
When I was at summer camp as a 12 year old at Wilson high, we were playing that game where everyone except one person touches a wall, then rushes to the other wall while "it" tries to tag you. Repeat until there is a winner. We were playing that game in a padded room used for trampolining, and the kid next to me stretched out his arm to touch the wall as he ran into it. His arm folded, broke in three places in the forearm and the bone popped through. He did not even realize. He turned around ready to run again, and I had to tell him he broke his arm. He looked at it, and just froze. Freaking weird.
I hear that when something like that happens, the brain sorta blocks out the pain. For all I know, that could just be a wives tale though. I mean, I did see Kenyon Martin break his leg in his Cincinnati days, during the C-USA tournament, and even though I was sitting up in the second bowl, I can still remember him screaming out in pain like he was giving birth, so I'm not sure how much credence to give that thought.
He didn't land on anyone. It was just landing wrong. I don't think it had anything to do with muscles or anything. The way he landed was a hard run to stop a three, then he landed on one leg sideways. The momentum just twisted hi bone to break.
In a high school football game, I was tackled. With the football on its end and my arm stuck upright (elbow on ground, hand around tip of football), one player hit me from the side and another hit me from the top. My forearm acquired an additional joint halfway up. I picked up the football with my forearm now molded to it, turned to my sideline and said, "I think I broke something". Several people vomited on sight. I didn't feel a thing. I should have been in unimaginable pain. Instead, all I remember is me on sitting on the training table with our super-hot trainer on her knees blowing up the air cast for my arm between my legs. Thank you, human body.
