It's funny, I thought this thread was an April Fools joke. I had just posted about how women don't even come close to scraping the men's game in the OT Random Thought Thread a day before, so I'm not going to give Griner any kudos in this thread. With that said, women can actually make a successful living playing ball, but it's in Europe. All the girls I knew playing ball growing up have said that the WNBA is more of the off-season. In a lot of countries in Europe, basketball is considered more of a women's game, and that's where they get the real bucks. It's not exactly NBA money, but it's still like corporate manager money, which is better than the WNBA teacher salaries.
This type of shit is funny to me. She'd have to play SF in the league. HAHA! Luke fucking Babbitt could go to the WNBA and average 45 a game! We had a chick in HS that was all state and went on to play in the Pac-10........ I used to crack up when she'd come down to the park and try to play with us. All for woman's rights, but keep it real.
You cracked-up even though she was playing with the guys at the park while you were getting them water and towels?
Where is our resident woman's rights activist on this topic....... I think even she would admit this is ridiculous!
Cuban sent shockwaves through the basketball world with his comments about drafting Griner. "If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said Tuesday. "I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it." Upon hearing about Cuban's comments, Griner sent out this message via Twitter: "I could hold my own. Let's do it."
I only watched her play one game, but other than her height, I am not sure why she is the one woman BB player that people think could make it. She is not even close to being one of the best ever to play the game. And that is what it would take. Her stats may say different, but she did not look very athletic to me. She would get eaten up alive in Men's NCAA. Let alone the NBA.
At some point a woman will make it in the NBA (and more then just a 15th man - I am talking bench contributor in games - not a starter that I can see) but that woman won't be Griner.
She'd even be a benchwarmer on the higher level AAU circuit. If a woman's going to make it, it's not going to be a woman that dominated the college game because of her height. It'd probably be a 6'0+ woman that was an insane sniper, and even then, who knows. This ain't exactly a major part of the women's suffrage movement, and I have no problem risking being sexist in saying that I don't think a women ever will, can, or should play in the NBA.
If she makes a team in the Las Vegas summer league, I will drop everything, buy tickets and fly out there immediately. And that is why Cuban will consider it. Publicity.
Does Cuban need the money or the publicity? It's not like this is a minor league hockey team putting Manute Bol in skates. I've got to throw out a quote from Geno Auriemma, the best women's basketball coach since Pat Summitt - http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/da...-mark-cuban-drafting-griner-would-be-sham.ece It would not only set women's basketball further back, but it'll also ruin Cuban's credibility just for a little bit of publicity and an inconsequential amount of revenue.
I suppose it could happen... when genetic modification is mainstream and the NBA doesn't ban those who have had the procedure.
I'm just waiting on an interview with Mark Cuban from a legitimate sports analyst, or at least an analyst that can tell him how stupid he is to even entertain the idea. Cuban is usually a pretty sharp guy when it comes to basketball, and watching Cuban expose Skip's lack of basketball knowledge made for one of the best interview's I've seen in a long time (he basically revealed that Skip didn't even know why teams run zones), but I've already lost some respect for him though with this move, and I'd love to see someone like Jay Bilas or Bomani Jones interview him about it. He's the owner of the Mavericks, not the Globetrotters. I don't want to see him turn the game into a gimmick.
Yes but it will be a very specialized role. Like the Babbitt role for us as one example. A dead eye shooter that only comes in to bomb threes when we are down at the end of games and need to come back. You are saying never which is an opinion and I can respect it but I think on this earth you want to never deal with absolutely's like never because there will always be too much unknown and norms are constantly changing throughout history. When you think what is possible from here until the end of time..... This could be even after we die (most likely will) but it will happen at some point that a woman is good enough (not to be a star but to contribute).
