Your feeling generous and pay for your food and just when your about to put some money into the tip container the cashier turns there head or there back? So they never see the tip money you just put in to the jar. Does this bother you at all? I usually don't tip at these kind of places but I have and have also gotten frowns.

So are you tipping because it makes you feel good and not because of the service? You don't tip unless they see you tip and thank you for it?

I tip because of there service and the quality of the food. Like I said I don't usually to this but sometimes you do this and they don't even see you even though you think they might.

Yep. Or even the chef! I was so impressed by this dude's cooking performance (Local Ocean - Newport, OR), I tipped him above an beyond the server. I had to "slip" the cash to him on the sly, though.

There was a Seinfeld episode about this. George gets pissed and takes the money out just so he can put it in when the cashier is watching and of course the cashier turns just in time to catch him with his hand in the jar.

I'm a serial tipper, to the point that I know when to throw the buck in as I am saying 'thank you too' while putting my buck in the tip jar. Cheesy, I know.

I want credit/acknowledgement for my tip. They want credit for their service, so I at least expect a simple "thank you".

I tip because it's the right thing to do. I don't care who sees me or whatever.

I can see throwing some coin/bill(s) in the jar at, say, a Starbucks.....if they're whipping up some kind of foo-foo drink. Not if they're just filling up a cup with Pike's, though....as I always get.

PS: Some people sure do seem to get a bit carried away with all those special coffee orders............shots of this, drizzles of that, no-whatever this, and sprinkles of that! :MARIS61:

I'll tip a little bit at places like Chipotle and such, but frankly I think the whole tip-jar thing has gotten kind of out of hand in a lot of places. "Super, you poured me a 20 oz. cup of drip coffee. Do you want a medal?"

i love in europe where you just kind of leave whatever. they don't expect tip, just maybe round up in change, i think they figure the service charge in the cost of the meal already..pretty dope and liberating. this is for sit down places. cab rides too. no tip expected...maybe just round up to the nearest euro.
