It's a murderous place for us poor guys. When I was going to an expensive private college there I had to live on Baby Ruths, cans of tuna, and Michelob off-campus. I was so afraid to go out in the dark during my acid trips, I climbed the tree in our yard and watched night crawlers. Tough, tough city.
I've been in L.A. most of the time for the last 8 years and I love it. I've lived in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Malibu, and Bell Canyon. Malibu was the best.
So can I, living in West Linn (Portland Metro). The question is, have you really done it? I have once (though I'd surfed and skiied within the same 3-4 day period numerous times). My first time really exploring LA as an adult was with my girlfriend (now wife). She is from SoCal. I still remember us driving on the freeway and her saying, "It's sooo smoggy. You can't even see the mountains." I was puzzled, and asked, "What mountains?" "Um, the ones right next to us!?!?!" That being said, I love LA for week-long vacations. Dunno if I could live there full-time (unless I'm in a phat house along one of the rad, cleaner beaches).
that's the point. no one does that shit. its just some stupid shit the california board of tourism touts around and paints Cali as this super awesome eco paradise, when LA is just such a shithole.
Of the cities I'd like to live in (in Southern California) San Diego ranks #1, and San Diego ranks #2. now if I could just find myself a sugar momma, or star in a TV show...
I'll show you my high school yearbook. We had 1 in 750 freshmen who was in any way cute. The people in this thread who like it are rich. I was only middle class, way above most of the inhabitants.
That is a nice part of San Diego, imho. My brother in law grew up there. Or as he says "la Jaw-luh". Poway isn't too bad, although the further away from downtown you get, the less I like it.
LA's okay to visit. Fuck no, I'd never live there. San Diego? Yeah, I could live there. I have an aunt who lived in Oceanside for years and now lives in Mission Beach. I love that city.
What do you consider LA? I live in the highlands of Pacific Palisades. Basically west LA. I have trail-heads that start 100 yards from my door that stretch for miles into Topanga state park. I can see deer wondering around from my deck. The beach is 5 minutes away. The village of PP is very beautiful, very, quiet, and very little traffic. The streets basically roll up at 7PM every night. The temperatures all year long are the same as San Diego. But to be honest, 4 years ago, i said the exact same thing as you are saying when my wife got transferred to LA. And there are a lot of areas of LA I hate. But there are a lot of areas that are great. We are surrounded by Malibu to the north, Brentwood to the east, Santa Monica to the south and the pacific ocean to the west. I work from home with no commute. Life ain't bad here after all.
Have you been in all the places in l.a.? Your claim is ridiculous. It is about as relevant as someone from la calling you all racist hicks.
people who visit LA get a bad experience because of the places that people are taken. You go to hollywood, disneyland, rodeo drive, walk of fame and santa monica's 3rd street promenade. its far from an accurate experience and I've found most people are like "is that it?". basically its taking someone from out of town...going to Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Waterfront Park and Multnomah falls and thinking "this is Portland, Oregon".
