American Muslims shouldn't have to apologize for the actions of maniacs so that assholes on the internet won't think they're terrorists.

 

I think they should if they want their religion to be viewed as something other than the religion of terrorists.

 

I don't think there's much they can really do to appease reactionary and short-sighted people. Folks with an ounce of common sense and understanding wouldn't come to such a conclusion.

 

After one attack, yes. Two, yes. Five, maybe. Ten, unsure. Twenty, thirty, at some point when you see attack after attack being done in the name of a specific religion, I think many people who are not reactionary, start to distrust that religion. And if the good peaceful followers of that religion don't stand up and loudly condemn those who kill in the name of their religion, then expect everyone to view that religion as a violent and horrific religion.

 

And if they do stand up and say it? Nothing changes. People don't give a shit if one person condemns the actions of another, if they can judge everyone for the action.

 

Some people don't care. Others do care. And I am more talking about groups, organizations, communities, mosques and Imams more than just other followers. But, I do think followers should encourage their church and groups to not only make statements of condemnation, but also hold bake sales or pot lucks to try and raise funds for the victims. There was a news story after the Boston bombing of a Michigan Muslim community raising funds for the victims, and I thought it was wonderful. Those are Muslims I welcome in my community.

 

How can you distrust a religion? How can a religion be violent and horrific? And honestly, if the majority of Muslims DID stand up and "loudly condemn" Islamic terrorism, how would you know?

Right. So, the Muslims who don't feel the need to hold a fucking bake sale to apologize for the actions of complete strangers who happen to share their religion aren't welcomed in your community? Muslims who won't do the "We're-not-terrorists" song and dance for your approval need not apply?

I distrust many religions, and the more recently there is a violence streak, the more I distrust. And are you really asking how a religion can be violent and horrific! Over and over throughout history religion as been the hand that wielded the sword.

I knew when in Bangladesh they stood up and and demanded tougher penalties or breaking Islamic law. I read the paper, watch the news, if many thousands of Muslims started a movement of publicly condemning terrorist actions, I'm pretty sure I would hear about it.

To a degree, yes. I'm not going to chase them out, or even be rude or disrespectful. But yes, I would like to live around people who are so repulsed by this violence that they need others to know that who they are is completely different from who the zealots are.
