Witches are routinely accused and burnt alive in many sub-Saharan African countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Ghana.... by Christians.

I'm not sure but I think they get their lashes over a period of time as so not to kill them and thus prolonging the torture.

And this is why some of us are terrified at the notion of combining church and state.

I couldn't agree more with Fuck Saudi Arabia.

I respect that you know far more than I do about Islam and the middle east, so I would like to hear your take on something I read today that mystifies me.

In Egypt, they have either pass legislation, or are considering legislation that will allow husbands to have sex with their wife for up to six hours after the wife is dead.

Is that an Egyption thing, or an Islamic thing? Why the HELL would they think this is a good thing for husbands to do? Do you have a sense for how Muslim women feel about this?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

I am referring to the isolationist policy that most liberals I read adhere to. They don't want to interfere with other countries' affairs usually.

Pardon me for nit-picking, but that's non-interventionism, not isolationism.

Thanks for the link, hoojacks, and I'm happy to hear that this is apparently a hoax. For the record, I didn't get this from any conservative site, I got it from Wiki.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Islam

I don't get why Media Matters has a banner on the link you provided that makes this sound like the right is making shit up to turn Americans against Islam. One of their own links says that this story was first reported by Egypt's own state run newspaper; then on an Egyptian TV show. So, I don't know why MM is blasting the right for assuming it was a real story.

I've been trying to educate myself on what's real and what's made up about Islamic customs, practices and beliefs.

Another of the things I've heard about (from guys returning from Afghanistan and seems to be real from what I read), is the custom of "man love Thursdays". According to what I've heard and read, this involves grown men having sex with young boys on Thursday nights.

This seems to fly in the face of what I read that Islam does not condone homosexuality. I've read that, in some Islamic countries gays can be put to death. How can homosexuality be condemned, but be a common practice?

If man love Thursday is real, how widespread is the practice? Does it happen every Thursday, or limited to 'special/holiday' Thursdays? Are the boys involved doing this willingly? Does it matter if they are willing? Is it a common in some/most/all Islamic countries, or is it more limited to Afghanistan?

Thanks again in advance to your insight.

Oddly enough isolationism is a textbook hallmark of "conservativism" in classic politcal thought.

    A) It's not something that's talked about much. It's not just on special Thursdays, though.
    B) If you are the "giver", there's little to no stigma, because they'd say "it's only homosexual if you're the receiver".
    C) The "receivers" are generally, though not always, the same class of people--poor, uneducated, without a strong protector-- who are sexually exploited and trafficked all over the world. And it's not usually "willing". And even if it was, would you consider it "willing" if a 13y/o girl said it was ok for me to sleep with her?

Absolutely not! I was trying to say it in a way that was not overly offensive if it was something made up, or so rare as to not be the issue I believed it might be.

Well, the amount of conservative news sources running with this story without any kind of fact checking is worth mentioning. The point is that if this story came out of anywhere that wasn't a Muslim country, then the American media would have been wary to report it without knowing if it was a hoax or not.

Cool! One piece of advice I'd stress is that since Islam covers such a wide stretch of different cultures, customs and languages, some cursory knowledge of those things are going to be needed to put everything in context. It's quite a large field of study.

I'd defer to BrianFromWA for anything on Afghanistan, but it sounds like this is a cultural thing in and among the tribes there. From my experience in Muslims countries, homosexuality is just as common as it is in any other part of the world, and depending on the community it is either shunned or ignored. I do know that in Morocco, there is a thriving gay culture, and even straight men will occasionally have sex with each other because in the butt = not sex. Seriously. That, and you can't catch AIDS from the butt. These same people may have the opinion that gays should be put to death.

But again, I think this is more cultural than religious.
