... or he may demand a trade. Can you imagine a year of Cousins unhappy with his contract situation? Looks like the Kings may be forced to pay him.

Also young, big, strong and the product of tanking.

He's really all they've got to show for 7 years of futility (or basically since they fired Adelman.) You can't just let him walk.

I think they really have to trade the guy. He's a lot like Z-Bo was here--he just isn't what you want ruling the roost at age 22. Not on a team devoid of real leadership.

Wish we could get him for Batum, our #10 and basically anything else they'd want outside of Damian/LMA. That could be a fun big 3 to build around. But I think he's likely to attract better deals than that. He just has too much size and talent.

Of course, if we did get him then we're stuck deciding if he's worth a max....

I don't know if I'd give that stuff up for Cousins. He's basically a less physically gifted Derrick Coleman. With his talent sure you always look at the option of acquiring him but at the end of the day think I'd rather go in a different direction. He could be a great player to rent for a contract year then let walk to another team at the end but that isn't the type of player I want to give up starters for.

Players like this remind me of the football (i.e. "soccer") striker Lee Chapman, who scored a lot of goals for my team, Leeds United. He was big and tended to score when the ball bounced off the head that he placed in its way. He had an insightful quote: "if I'd been more talented, I would probably have scored fewer goals." Cousins is more talented than is healthy for somebody who should just stay in the low post and score more efficiently. After all, we can't all be Sabonis.

    Cousins deserves Koncak money.

Not adjusted for inflation or NBA pay changes since 1989.

I would have been happy with DMC, before.

    Not now.

I still like the idea of getting the big lug, even if it costs a bunch.

A max contract is all he needs to fix that oversized ego.

To clarify: If he had earned it that would be one thing. He hasn't. I was willing to put up with his knuckle-headedness before but combined with this, no thanks.

I would risk DMC. He is exactly what we need, minus the immaturity. However I think every team can handle one loose cannon if their core is strong and mature enough. DMC's emotion could actually be a benefit to us. Being a Portland team we need to take calculated risks to get solid players because no one just comes here for the hell of it. DMC is worth the risk, max contract is tough to swallow but thats what C's with his ability go for these days.

Signing Cousins to a max contract is the type of risk that destroys franchises for years. I'd pass and look at other options. If we get desperate we always have the option of trading LMA.

Welcome and I like your first post. I might roll the dice if DMC was cheap(like say he only cost us the 10th pick and the greek) but he is going to cost a lot to get on top of having to give him a max contract immediately. If he just cashes it in after he gets his max or anything goes wrong we are screwed, especially in this new CBA Era, it'll be worse then having Darius Miles contract hanging over us.

Thing is we will have that option of trading LMA with or without DMC. At this point I feel that we are committed to building around LMA and if that experiment doenst work DMC would be half way though his contract anyway and we could be looking to trade him as an expiring or to pawn him off on the next sucker. For a young talented center there will always be another sucker. However, I think that DMC's real problem is that he plays in Sacramento and he is basically the leader of that team. Put him in a good organization, with a solid team that wins he 99% of his problems melt away. Winning fixes everything. For me DMC really comes down to what we have to part with to get him.

Thanks Rhal, I posted here but it's been couple years. As far as Cousins I wouldn't give a max contract to a guy like Cousins. He's a huge risk especially with the new CBA. Teams are being way more careful about handing out big contracts. This summer will be interesting to see what guys sign for.
