A knife attack in western China early Wednesday left 27 people dead, the bloodiest incident since 2009 in a region marked with ethnic violence.

The violence in Lukqun, a town in the Turkic-speaking Xinjiang province, which was described in local media as "riots," also left at least three people injured.

Of the dead, 17 people, including 9 police, were victims of the assailants. Police were then able to shoot and kill the 10 attackers.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the attacks, but the Uighur Muslim population has consistently strained against Han Chinese "sustained repression and provocation." China, in turn, often blames Uighur activists for provoking violence.

In a situation that was described in the article by the local media as a riot, I would say giving everyone guns including victims and perps would have escalated the overall violence.

 

I didn't say to arm the perps. The article says a riot, in which the police shot 10 to the perps. If the victims had guns, lots of people would still have died, but more of them would have been the perps.

The perps killed 10 of the police.

What better time to be armed and in a position of taking care of one's self? They would at least have some measure of control over their fate.
