Where do things stand with Jaromir Jagr and is he going to sign with the Devils?

That’s been a question I’ve been getting a lot over the last three days and, unfortunately, I have to be honest and say I don’t know.

I’ve been reluctant to write anything about it because I have no solid information that’s come from anyone in North America that the Devils are involved. But there is certainly a decent amount of smoke coming from Jagr’s native Czech Republic.

There were reports from Czech that the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer was in New Jersey on Thursday and close to signing with the Devils. But isport.cz, which has reported a few different things on Jagr, went from saying Saturday that Jagr was within hours of signing with the Devils to now saying that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to bring back Jagr, who played for them in 2011-12.

I cannot speak for the reliability of isport.cz, which is why I previously held off on using any of their information. And now isport.cz doesn’t sound as certain as it once did about what is going on.

Saturday morning, Roman Jedlicka, an NHL play-by-play announcer in the Czech Republic, posted on Twitter that it was “99 percent” that Jagr is going to sign with the Devils, citing a “good source.”

There’s been nothing from Jedlicka since then.

I’ve left multiple telephone and email messages for Jagr’s agent, Petr Svoboda, over the last couple of weeks and over the last few days, but he has not responded. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has given his usual, “I don’t comment” on whether he’s interested or not interested in any player not from his team. I’ve had him tell me after the fact that he was not involved in trying to sign a free agent that signed with another team—that was the case with Vincent Lecavalier—but can’t recall a time he said anything like that when the player was still in play.
