In some low income environments, a college athletic scholarship may be the best chance out, though.

And why should people go to prison, ruining their lives? Why must we live in a police state to prevent people from doing what they want?

Yet plenty make it without doing it, and still would. If some think it'll give them an advantage, fine, go for it. They aren't forced to. And, even if the argument is that if it's allowed, you'd almost have to to succeed, it isn't like professional sports is their only option in life, where it's take these drugs, or you're screwed.
But, if they choose to take them, great. Many kids choose to do many things that likely aren't good for them. Binge drnk, drugs, smoke, poor sleep habits, etc. Hell, you can argue that all of the hours wasted playing basketball, training, practicing, playing, traveling and what not is detrimental to their long term ability to succeed in something a lot more likely and reasoable. Thy can choose to spend those hours studying a subject they have a much higher likelihood of becoming a pro in.

Not everyone wants to have experimental medical procedures or exercises either.

And they already do put a ton of drugs in their bodies, so I don't really get your point.

If you could take a pill that would make you 15 years younger physically (or put you at a point slightly higher than your physical peak years) but it would take five years off your life, would you do it?

I would seriously consider it, but probably not.

That's just a stupid post. I agree that the rules are stupid, but they are the rules of the professional leagues. I was being literal, but you probably forgot what that means.

Of course I would take it. Live for the present, with a plan for the future. I'm not looking 10 years down the road. I'm having fun living every day. I ate the Benny at Fat City this morning. Why? Because it tastes good! If it means a bit more exercise, oh well, because it feels good to work out today!

I'm surprised you would take it given you are a family man and all. What about 5 more years to watch your grandchildren grow?

Not some dig on you or attack on your personal life . . . just discussing.

This thread pretends it's a theoretical debate over moral rules.

It's a war over who will, after years in prison, live under a bridge because he's unemployable.

If there were no Congressional blowhards making it illegal with long sentences, and manipulating players into perjury, then this thread's lighthearted debate would be relevant.

I don't believe you can effectively plan for the future. If you mean 'literally' five years, like terminal cancer would be five years later, or a car crash, then sure, I'd take it. If you mean that you'd live five more years theoretically, which seems to be the case with PEDs, then I'd probably take the PEDs and make the money. Maybe we're crossing wires on what you actually meant? I wouldn't literally give up 5 years of a finite death at this point, I don't think. Unless I was told I'd live until 93, like my grandpa, and could be 15 years younger until age 88, when I'd die. I think I'd take the younger years as opposed to being put into a nursing home, like we had to do with my Grandpa.

So how much worse would LeBron be if he didn't take PED's? Wouldn't he still be able to dominate?
